For the normal functioning of the city, they need a variety of products and raw materials. Below are the numbers intake of various substances to a city with a population of 1 million people (million tons / year):

Pure water 470,0
Air 50,2
Mineral construction raw materials 10,0
Coal 3,8
Raw oil 3,6
Ferrous metallurgy raw materials 3,5
Natural gas 1,7
Liquid fuel 1,6
Mining and chemical raw materials 1,5
Raw materials of non-ferrous metallurgy 1,2
Technical vegetable raw materials 1,0
Food industry raw materials, prepared foodstuffs 1,0
Energy chemical raw materials 0,22

As can be seen from the above data, the city consumes clean water the most: with a population of 1 million inhabitants, its amount is 470 million tons per year. Most of the water from the city enters natural streams, but already in the form of wastewater contaminated with various impurities.

In cities, fuel combustion is constantly carried out, which is accompanied by the consumption of oxygen, which is used primarily for the oxidation of hydrogen and carbon compounds. Calculations show that the millionth city consumes about 50 million tons of air a year.

The next largest flow of matter entering the city is mineral construction raw materials (up to 10 million tons/year), which serves as a source of dust entering the atmosphere.

Among technogenic flows, various types of fuel are important (in million tons/year): coal - 3,8; crude oil - 3,6; natural gas - 1,7 and liquid fuel - 1,6. The ratio of fuel types may be different, but each millionaire city receives up to 7-8 million tons of reference fuel per year.

A significant place is occupied by the supply of raw materials for industrial enterprises. Depending on the industrial specialization of the city, raw materials can be very different. The generalized model of a million city is a polyindustrial center, which has both ferrous metallurgy (3,5 million tons of raw materials) and non-ferrous metallurgy (1,2 million tons of raw materials). Mining and chemical raw materials amount to 1,5 million tons, technical vegetable raw materials - about 1 million tons, energy-chemical raw materials - within 0,22 million tons.

A special place is occupied by products used in the food industry and supplied directly to grocery stores, markets and public catering establishments. Residents of the city consume about 1 million tons of food products per year (including processing waste).

Thus, about 29 million tons of various substances enter the city-millionaire per year (excluding water and air); during transportation and processing, they produce a significant amount of waste, some of which has a negative impact on environmental objects. Part of the pollutants enters the atmosphere, the other part, together with wastewater, into water bodies and underground aquifers, and another part, in the form of solid waste, into the soil.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Color e-paper in 2012 22.06.2010

Plastic Logic has not yet released the promised QUE proReader, and is already making plans to develop the next generation of such a product. In this case, we are talking about the creation of colored electronic paper, which is planned to be used in future devices of this type.

At the International Electronics Forum event, held in Dresden (Germany), its representative said that now Plastic Logic engineers are working on a new display in a laboratory in Cambridge. Probably, the first samples of colored electronic paper will appear at the end of 2011, and in 2012 its mass production will begin.
