Radiation hazardous facility (ROO) - an enterprise where massive radiation damage can occur in case of accidents.

Radiation accident - an incident that led to the release (release) of radioactive products and ionizing radiation beyond the limits provided for by the project (boundaries of the zones of operating equipment) of enterprises in quantities exceeding the established safety standards.

Radiation accidents are divided into three types:

1) local (there was no release of radioactive products or ionizing radiation beyond the provided boundaries of equipment, technological systems, buildings and structures);

2) local (there was a release of radioactive products within the sanitary protection zone);

3) general (radioactive products have been released outside the sanitary protection zone and in an amount that leads to radioactive contamination of the adjacent territory and possible exposure of the population living on it above the established norms, and an emergency situation arises. In the event of such an accident, the ROO immediately notifies the population of nearby areas and local structures of the RSChS).

Consequences of radiation accidents

The main damaging factors in radiation accidents are radiation exposure and radioactive contamination. In addition, accidents can begin and be accompanied by explosions and fires.

Consequences of radioactive contamination:

1) large territories adjacent to the accident site and remote from it for many hundreds of kilometers are exposed to radioactive contamination, and an emergency situation arises;

2) radioactive contamination affects people, animals and other living organisms, plants of all kinds;

3) the damaging effect of radioactive contamination continues for a long time, while units of the RSChS and GO are deployed in the emergency zone, conducting reconnaissance and decontamination of the contaminated area using special equipment.

radioactive contamination in a general large-scale accident, structures, communications, technological equipment, vehicles, property, materials and food, agricultural land and the natural environment are affected.

The radiation effect on a person consists in the ionization of the tissues of his body and the occurrence of radiation sickness of various degrees. In this case, first of all, the hematopoietic organs are affected, as a result of which oxygen starvation of tissues occurs, the body's immune defenses sharply decrease, and blood clotting worsens.

To organize the protection of personnel and the public, advance zoning of the territory around radiation hazardous facilities is carried out.

Rules for the behavior of the population in case of radiation contamination of the area:

1) protect the respiratory organs with available personal protective equipment - wear gas masks, respirators, cotton-cloth bandages, anti-dust fabric masks or use improvised means (shawls, scarves, etc.);

2) if possible, quickly take cover in the nearest building, protective structure;

3) upon entering the premises, remove and place outerwear and shoes in a plastic bag or film, close windows and doors, turn off ventilation, turn on the TV, radio;

4) take a seat away from windows;

5) in the presence of a radiation dose rate meter (dosimeter, X-ray meter), determine the level of radiation;

6) seal the premises and protect food;

7) make a supply of water in closed vessels;

8) take medicines that are issued by medical institutions in the first hours after the accident;

9) strictly observe the rules of personal hygiene, which significantly reduce the internal exposure of the body;

10) leave the premises only when absolutely necessary and for a short time.

When leaving, protect the respiratory organs and wear raincoats, capes made from improvised materials and skin protection. After returning, change.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Not all carrots are equally healthy 26.04.2024

Carrots have long been recognized as one of the healthiest foods due to their beta-carotene content, a substance that is converted into vitamin A, which is essential for maintaining vision and cardiovascular health. However, recent research shows that not all people benefit equally from eating carrots due to genetic differences.

Scientists at the University of Illinois studied the effects of beta-carotene on cardiovascular health, finding that its effectiveness depends on each person's genetic makeup. It turns out that the activity of the enzyme that converts beta-carotene into vitamin A varies between individuals, which determines how efficiently the body uses it.

During the study, scientists analyzed blood samples and DNA from more than 700 healthy young people. They found a correlation between enzyme activity and levels of "bad" cholesterol, and also found that genetic variations that affect enzyme activity are associated with blood cholesterol levels.

Experiments on mice confirmed the connection between beta-carotene levels and cholesterol deposits in blood vessels. High levels of vitamin A in the body actually reduced the risk of fatty plaque forming in the arteries.

It is important to note that approximately half of people have a genetically reduced activity of the enzyme responsible for converting beta-carotene into vitamin A. For them, eating carrots may be less effective, and it is recommended to look at other sources of vitamins, such as milk and cottage cheese.

Scientific work highlights the importance of taking genetic factors into account when assessing the health benefits of foods. The finding that the effectiveness of beta-carotene depends on the activity of a specific enzyme opens up new prospects for individualizing dietary recommendations and developing personalized approaches to maintaining cardiovascular health.
