Anyone who has made model ships with electric drive is familiar with the problems associated with power supplies. You have to replace batteries often, but they are not cheap at all. Hence the continued interest that modellers show in the idea of replacing the electric drive. For example - on... a steam one, which does not require any power supply to operate.

I think I was lucky: while leafing through library files of magazines, I miraculously came across an article."Steamer with a candle", published in No. 8 of "Model Designer" for 2000. However, I did not blindly copy the technical solutions presented there. And the specific conditions, materials and equipment at my disposal required a slightly different approach to the implementation of the conceived idea - the installation of an improved steam engine for a model of a coast guard boat.

Steam engine on a ship
Steam jet engine on a model of a coast guard boat (the chimney is not shown): 1 - hull of the boat model; 2 and 12 - main and additional boiler rooms; 3 - ring conduit; 4 - wick; 5 - firebox; 6 - steam line; 7 - rotary nozzle; 8 - fluoroplastic bushing; 9 - steering device; 10 - heat-insulating shell (a tin can lined with asbestos on the inside, with an upper rectangular opening for the chimney and round lower ones for supplying fuel with subsequent air flow); 11 - boiler; 13 - waterline; 14 - additional boiler; knot since years. 3,6 and 11 (assembled) - from the motor-compressor of a domestic refrigerator.

Like the prototype described in the magazine, the engine I propose contains a steam injection line. But it is connected to the top of a real, not a pseudo-boiler. The boiler must be equipped with a heat-insulating shell.

Sea water is supplied to the boiler from below using a ring water conduit and heated to a boil by the flame of a candle (lamp) installed in a kind of firebox. The resulting steam enters the discharge steam line, which ends under the bottom of the stern, in place of the propeller shaft. The ship moves due to the reactive energy of a jet of steam escaping from the outlet of the steam line and directed into a rotating nozzle controlled by a steering device.

For stable operation of such a system, the following conditions must be met. The suction end of the water pipe is located 30-40 mm below the exhaust end of the steam pipe. The lower third of the boiler should not be above the waterline. It is highly desirable that the diameter of the water pipeline be half that of the steam pipeline.

A ready-made “steam boiler” with tubes can be found if you open the motor-compressor housing of an old refrigerator. What is to become a conduit must be bent into a ring, and the end brought under the keel. The cistern-boiler will hang securely on this ring and a tin lid - a firebox with a candle (lamp) - will be conveniently placed.

A tin can will serve as a convenient blank for the boiler shell if it is covered from the inside with sheet asbestos. The latter must be fastened to a tin base with wire and impregnated with liquid glass (office glue). In the shell, it is necessary to prudently make an upper rectangular hole for the chimney, as well as several round lower ones - for supplying fuel and subsequently ensuring air flow. The stable burning of a candle in the firebox is ensured by a non-falling wick - a strip of dense cotton fabric stitched with steel wire.

To adjust the course of the steamer, do not be lazy to make a steering device with a rotating nozzle that controls the jet stream.

The design of the model allows for its further improvement. With the appropriate skill, you can, for example, install a second steam boiler, especially since the corresponding compartment for it is already provided in the model. True, the rotating device then needs to be installed on each nozzle.

Well, if you equip such a homemade product with, say, a mainmast, a mizzen mast and a hanging keel, then you can get a lot of pleasure from an unusual model of a sailing-steam-jet vessel.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

A safe and inexpensive way to launch small satellites 21.07.2019

The search for low cost solutions to propel CubeSats is one of the most important components of the rapidly growing commercial satellite launch industry. The small size and relatively low cost have made CubeSats a popular choice for commercial launches in recent years.

The first CubeSat was launched in 1999. Since then, over 1000 have been sent into space. The rapid development and application of nanosatellite technology has greatly increased the complexity of the mission - sparking interest in reliable, low power and highly specific pulsed micropulse systems.

Purdue University researchers have created a novel micropulsation system for nanosatellite applications using a pulsed, liquid-fed plasma engine. It uses liquid propellant for a plasma accelerator with a pulsed Lorentz force and an extended life ignition system driven by nanosecond long pulses.

"Our innovations help address current challenges with CubeSat micropulsation systems, including short lifespan, contamination risks and economic challenges," said Alexei Shashurin, assistant professor of aeronautics and astronautics at Purdue Technical College. "Our system is capable of operating reliably throughout the mission, and The liquid fuels we use do not pose the pollution risk to subsystems that we see with current options."
