Children of all ages love making and launching boats on the water. Those who are older may be interested in the proposed design of an unusual toy boat set in motion with the help of ... a candle. Like a big steamship, this one also has a "furnace" and a "steam boiler", but there are no moving mechanisms. However, the ship itself is moving. What pushes him forward?

Steamer with a candle
Toy steamer: 1 - hull; 2 - deck; 3 - superstructure; 4 - "steam boiler"; 5 - "race"

Steamer with a candle
Engine scheme: 1 - toy body; 2 - "steam boiler" (copper tube); 3 - "furnace" (a bowl with a burning candle); 4 - ends of the tube, output; A - a spiral version of the "steam boiler"; B - one-knee version

The "steam boiler" is a small thin tube (preferably copper), bent so that its spiral middle is above the candle, and the ends in the stern of the boat would go into the water. It is worth filling the tube with water and, having lowered the steamer into the water, put a candle under the spiral of the tube, as the boat will start sailing by itself. The flame, heating the tube, contributes to the displacement of hot water from it, in place of which they are instantly sucked in, heated up, and new portions of it are immediately thrown out, pushing the boat forward.

Such an engine can be built into any floating body. However, given the presence of a flame, and hence the threat of a "fire on the ship", it is better to make a case out of tin using a soldering iron. Any deck superstructures are possible - the main thing is that they allow you to place a "steam boiler". The design of the latter can also be different: the options for bending the tube at the place of heating shown in the figure provide different "power" of the engine.

The "furnace" with a candle does not have to be hidden in the superstructure. However, this option is more spectacular: the device itself is not visible from the outside, and the reflections of the flame in the windows of the superstructures enliven the ship, especially at dusk.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Sony IMX224MQV image sensor with record-breaking light sensitivity 24.10.2014

Sony introduced the IMX224MQV image sensor for automotive cameras. The Sony IMX224MQV 1/3-inch CMOS image sensor has a resolution of 1,27 MP. According to the manufacturer, it has a record high light sensitivity in its category and allows you to shoot in almost complete darkness.

To obtain a color image, an illumination of 0,005 lux is sufficient. For example: on a full moon in a clear sky, the illumination is 0,25-0,3 lux, and the stars on a moonless night create an illumination of 0,01 lux. In other words, the new sensor allows you to shoot in almost complete darkness. In addition, the IMX224MQV is Sony's first mass-produced sensor to meet reliability requirements for automotive electronics (AEC-Q100 test).

Sensor resolution - 1305 x 977 pixels. Pixel size - 3,75 x 3,75 microns. The diagonal sensor size is 6,09 mm. In full resolution, the sensor is capable of producing an image in 10-bit representation at a frequency of 120 fps, in 12-bit - at a frequency of 60 fps.

The sensor is housed in a 9,0 x 7,5 mm BGA package with 72 pins.
