Dangerous hydroelectric power station 16.08.2012

Hydroelectric power is generally considered to be "environmentally friendly". In fact, nothing is burned here, the air is not polluted and no waste remains.

However, the case of the Chinese Three Gorges hydroelectric power station on the Yangtze River, the most powerful in the world, casts doubt on the harmlessness of hydroelectric power stations. Although the hydroelectric power plant should finally be put into operation only at the end of 2012, when the last three turbines will start working, the unpleasant consequences are already clear. A reservoir of 1080 square kilometers formed in front of the dam sank 13 cities and 466 villages, and 1,3 million people had to be relocated. After the construction of the dam, the water of the Yangtze became undrinkable, as toxic microalgae multiplied in the stagnant water of not only the river, but also its 22 tributaries.

The existence of the rarest species of animals - the river dolphin and several species of fish - is under threat. At the bottom of the reservoir, silt and sand brought by water are accumulating faster than expected. Over the next ten years, at least $27 billion will have to be spent on mitigating these consequences. This is four billion more than the cost of the construction itself.
