Dimensity 9000 single-chip system

MediaTek has unveiled the Dimensity 9000 SoC, the flagship smartphone platform for 2022. In one, the novelty compares favorably with the platforms of Qualcomm and Apple - this is the world's first SoC, produced according to the 4 nm process technology. Theoretically, this gives it an advantage in terms of lower power consumption. However, the difference between Qualcomm and Apple's 5nm SoCs is small.

The production of Dimensity 9000 is entrusted to TSMC, ready-made devices based on the new platform are promised in the first quarter of 2022, that is, flagships based on Snapdragon 898 and Dimensity 9000 will appear almost simultaneously.

Preliminary SoC configuration data has been fully confirmed by the official ones. The platform CPU is triple-clustered, with one Arm Cortex-X2 core at 3,05 GHz, three Arm Cortex-A710 cores at 2,85 GHz, and four Cortex-A510 cores at 1,8 GHz. The 10-core accelerator Arm Mali-G710 acted as the GPU.

Also on a single-chip configuration, a fifth-generation six-core APU for AI acceleration and an all-new 18-bit DSP with support for cameras up to 320 MP (!) and support for simultaneous recording of three 4K HDR video streams (or simultaneous capture of three 32 MP a photo).

The platform supports LPDDR5X memory and Full HD+ screens at 180Hz (or WQHD+ at 144Hz). There is a built-in 5G modem, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 modules.

The platform has already been positively noted in tests: a Vivo smartphone based on it for the first time in the Android segment scored more than a million points in AnTuTu. Probably debuting in about two weeks, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 898 SoC will be no less powerful, but this is a precedent for MediaTek: for the first time, the Taiwanese company's platform will compete on equal terms with an American competitor. The head of Redmi, Lu Weibing, immediately after the announcement of Dimensity 9000, asked users of the Weibo social network how they perceived the new product. Apparently, Redmi is already preparing a flagship on this SoC. According to preliminary data, it will be part of the Redmi K50 series of smartphones.

When learning a language, it is better to write by hand 20.07.2021

When learning a new language, scientists have found that writing by hand is better than typing or watching videos.

In the study, volunteers learned the Arabic alphabet from scratch. They were divided into three groups: those who wrote by hand, those who typed text on the keyboard, and those who watched the video. Those who watched the video had to learn a letter and then immediately find that letter on the screen. The typing participants had to find the letter on the keyboard, and the handwritten participants had to write the letter with a pen on paper.

Each group was given six lessons. During this time, each volunteer had to learn the alphabet and make a minimum of mistakes during testing. People who wrote by hand learned it faster than others. Some of them learned the alphabet in just two sessions.

The scientists also tested other indicators of literacy: they wanted to see if the volunteers could "generalize" new knowledge and use letters to write new words and recognize unfamiliar words. Once again, the people who wrote by hand did a better job than anyone else.

Each study participant was an adult, but experts believe the same principles apply to children. The key, they believe, is that writing on paper reinforces what students learn about a letter, such as a sound, beyond their form.
