Piston steam engine with oscillating cylinder
Piston steam engine with a rocking cylinder: 1 - steam inlet pipe (copper tube, solder in hole B of part 2; solder a similar pipe in hole G of steam outlet), 2 - engine frame (steel sheet 4 mm thick), 3 - M4 nut, 4 - spring pressing plate 6 to frame 2, 5 - cylinder swing axis (steel wire with a diameter of 4 mm with M4 thread), 6 - plate (bronze, soldered on parts 16), 7 - flywheel, 8 - crank axis (steel wire with a diameter 4 mm), 9 - bronze bearing bush, 10 - crank pin (steel wire 4 mm in diameter, pressed into parts 11), 11 - crank web (steel sheet 5 mm thick, pressed and riveted onto parts 8), 12 - plate balancer, 13 - piston rod, 14 - bottom cover of the cylinder with a guide hole for the piston rod (make four holes with a diameter of 2 mm to purge the under-piston space), 15 - piston (fit to the inner size of the cylinder, make two sealing grooves in accordance with the figure) , 16 - cylinder (metal tube with a diameter of 16 x 1 mm and a length of 50 mm), 17 - the upper blind cover of the cylinder (solder into part 16 after assembly, like part 14)

Shown below is a prism installed in place of a plate as recommended in the book Technical Creativity.

The steam engine he built is easily reproducible in almost any conditions. Its advantage is the absence of complex, requiring precision processing and assembly of elements for distributing the inlet and outlet of steam from the cavity of the working cylinder. The main requirements for the quality of manufacturing of the components of this engine are the ease of movement of all moving parts, the absence of jamming, as well as a good fit of the piston to the working surface of the cylinder.

Particular attention should be paid to grinding the rubbing surfaces of the plate and frame soldered to the cylinder in the area of the inlet and exhaust holes. Here we can recommend the solution proposed in the book "Technical Creativity" (publishing house "Young Guard", Moscow, 1956), where drawings and a description of just such a design (only slightly smaller and powered by compressed air) were published. There, not just a plate was soldered onto the cylinder, but a special prism with two relatively narrow friction belts spaced apart in height. This provides not only improved lapping and less mechanical losses, but also better clamping of the zones that act as a spool and are under the influence of steam pressure (the greater the pressure, the stronger the rubbing parts must be compressed).

This steam engine can be installed on model ships in any position convenient for layout. Torque transmission - rubber belt or gears; depending on this, a pulley or gear is fixed behind the flywheel on the shaft.

Such a steam engine works well when powered by a soldered tin-boiler heated by dry alcohol tablets. In this case, however, it is necessary to strictly observe the safety rules for medium-pressure steam generators.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Sensory networks made from spystones 03.11.2013

Lockheed Martin has demonstrated a new SPAN (Self-Powered Ad-hoc Network) surveillance technology. This is a hidden wireless autonomous sensor network that can provide long-term surveillance of the area. The network modules are parallelepipeds that fit in the palm of your hand, they are equipped with a radio antenna and, depending on the need, sensors: acoustic, magnetic, seismic, optical or others. The modules are so small that they can fit in a stone: an artificial piece of rock, a floor inside. From a distance of several steps, such a stone cannot be distinguished from natural, which makes it difficult to detect this tracking device.

A small sensor module equipped with wireless communication can be hidden in artificial stone, building wall and other objects and natural hiding places

The SPAN network is a self-organizing network of sensors that monitor a specific area of the surface. When one sensor-stone detects, for example, a vibration produced by an enemy tank, it sends a signal through a network of other sensor stones to an unmanned aerial vehicle, which immediately directs the lenses of a video camera and thermal imager, radar or other devices to the area where the threat was noticed. Thus, an immediate response to a threat is achieved, in addition, the need for UAVs and operators monitoring multiple monitors is reduced. The SPAN network uses algorithms to reduce false positives and operates autonomously without the need for maintenance and continuous management.

"Seeding" certain areas of the theater of operations, according to representatives of Lockheed Martin, will require minimal costs. At the same time, "smart" stones will be able to work autonomously for many years, thanks to power from solar panels and perfect energy-efficient technologies. In addition, the very fact of the existence and use of sensor stones is a powerful psychological factor affecting the enemy. Today, UAVs are an example of such a demoralizing factor that reduces the ability to resist.

Networked stones can be used not only by the military, but also, for example, when protecting pipelines, nuclear power plants and other critical infrastructure facilities.
