The model, which will be discussed in this article, warmed the soul of more than one generation of young sailors. In the distant post-war years, and even back in the sixties, a similar boat could be found on store shelves. It was distinguished from many toy brothers by an operating steam engine in the hold - a real fire burned in the furnace, water heated up and boiled in a small steam boiler, quietly rumbling, pushing the boat forward two small water cannons made of thin tubes. It was impossible to look at the boat without admiration - it was so real! And a light soot from burnt fuel on the surface of the cabin gave this amazing little car a truly "combat" look. The greatest effect was achieved at dusk, when, at full speed, flickering reflections of flame could be observed in the windows of the cabin.

The model of the boat is so simple that literally everyone can make it. Propulsion is provided by a water-jet propulsion engine, which ejects water from thin tubes in the stern thanks to the steam pressure in the steam boiler. Steam is generated by burning fuel (dry fuel or cotton wool with alcohol), which is located directly under the boiler and ensures the operation of the engine for several minutes. The formation of steam in the boiler is accompanied by a characteristic rumbling sound, which creates a complete illusion of the operation of a "real" engine.

All that is needed to make a boat is a little tin plate, a thin long metal tube (copper, brass), a soldering iron and ordinary tin solder. Armed with everything you need and not forgetting about safety, let's start making a model. Ideal is tinned tin, which is used in the manufacture of cans for condensed milk. On the one hand, it is well cut, and on the other hand, it is perfectly soldered using rosin and tin solder. The template for the manufacture of the boat hull is shown in the figure. We cut out the tin according to the template and drill holes in it for the subsequent fastening of the steam boiler. We form the hull of the boat by bending and soldering the tin in accordance with the drawing.

Particular attention should be paid to the correct manufacture of a steam boiler and a jet propulsion engine from a long tube. In fact, this is one part that bends in a rather complex way, in accordance with the drawing. It is important that all bends are smooth and the tube is not pinched anywhere. You can check the finished "propulsion system" by blowing into one of the ends of the tube - the air should pass freely.

A curved tube is threaded into the holes in the bottom and soldered so that part of it - the steam boiler itself - is inside the boat hull (in the hold), and two long straight tubes of the water cannon pass under the bottom. Tin cutting can be made of arbitrary shape, for example, such as shown in the drawing. Having completed the installation and soldering of the entire structure, they proceed to the most exciting part of the work - water testing.

First you need to fill the ship's steam boiler with water. We turn the boat stern up and pour water into one of the tubes of the jet propulsion engine. It is convenient to use a medical syringe for these purposes. When water begins to pour out of the other end of the tube, the operation can be considered completed. Then, carefully, but quickly enough, we lower the boat into the water and, having previously removed the cabin, we install a tablet of dry fuel or a cotton swab with alcohol under the boiler.

We set fire to the fuel and return the cabin to its place. Now you need to wait a bit until the flame heats up the steam boiler and the water in it begins to turn into steam. A characteristic rumbling will tell us that the steam engine has started working - the boat will slide through the water, leaving behind waves that are not at all toy.

Of course, the shape of the vessel and its dimensions can be varied. For example, to give it the characteristic features of a particular historical era, add elements of rigging, color it accordingly. Undoubtedly, competitions of such models-toys for speed, range, duration of swimming will be exciting. It is important not to forget that a real fire burns inside the model, and therefore handling it requires caution.

Signal transmission through human tissue 13.04.2020

A team of developers from Finland has demonstrated the operation of a method of signal transmission to implants placed inside biological tissue that is safe for living organisms. The signal cannot be intercepted, blocked or changed from a long distance.

Professor Marcos Katz of the University of Oulu has led research for many years to find alternative ways to communicate. In 2017, together with colleagues, the scientist developed a hybrid communication channel that can smoothly switch between the transmission modes of radio waves and waves in visible light using VLC (Visible Light Communication) technology. The channel operation mode depended on its state and transmitted information.

When testing, the radiation wavelength was increased from a few millimeters to several centimeters and found a good connection even for deeply located implants. The external signal source was located at a distance of several meters from the "body".

The first results - 10 kilobits per second - did not please scientists too much. Then she increased the number of receivers / signal sources, conjured over modulation schemes and received a multiple increase in the transmission rate.

The technology of transmitting a signal using infrared radiation is useful not only in communication applications. The VLC can be used to control, for example, pacemakers and defibrillators. At the same time, radio interference or someone's malicious intent will not be able to cause the failure of this vital equipment.

It is with the use of technology in the medical field that the future research of the Finnish team is connected. The developers hope to contribute to the development of methods for diagnosing and treating diseases, as well as controlling devices implanted in the human body. It remains only to better understand the biological tissue as a conducting medium for infrared radiation.
