An important achievement of man was the development of composite tools. Their appearance made a real revolution in the technology of the Stone Age.

For a long time, a hand ax and a stick existed and were used separately. By connecting them with veins or leather straps, people received a fundamentally new tool - a stone ax, which soon became the most important accessory of primitive life. The ax made it possible to increase the force of striking with a stone several times.

Many production operations that previously represented a significant difficulty (first of all, felling trees, preparing firewood and all the work associated with wood processing) have now become relatively simple. Of course, the first ax was still very far from modern, but the progress compared to the hand ax that existed before was enormous.

Stone tools of primitive man

A well-known specialist in the technique of the Stone Age, Professor Semenov, found that when replacing the ax with a primitive stone ax, the cutting speed increased tenfold. Therefore, those who claim that the appearance of the handle constituted an era in the history of mankind do not exaggerate at all. It may seem that the idea of connecting a stone with a stick is very simple. However, it is not. The handle was a rather complex and difficult invention for a person. Therefore, composite tools appeared rather late.

After the invention of the ax, the idea of a composite tool found its widest application in other tools. By combining a sharp stone tip with a long stick, a man received a spear - a powerful weapon of primitive times. Having a spear in his hands, he could boldly go out into battle even with the most powerful beast. Already in its early history, spears began to be divided into heavy and light ones. The latter were used for throwing (for ease, the stone tip was usually replaced with a bone one). Along with the ax, the spear became the most important, although not the only tool of primitive man.

The so-called liner tools became a special kind of composite tools. Man was prompted to make them by the observation that only an insignificant part of the instrument (it is called the working part) always takes part in the work. Therefore, it is not at all necessary to make the tool entirely of stone.

By combining stone plates with a wooden handle in various ways, the ancient man received many prototypes of modern cutting, piercing and planing tools. They were much more convenient and practical than the previous ones, and besides, they made it possible to save silicon, which was not widely distributed and, due to its hardness, was difficult to process.

The new tools also had the important advantage that after the wear of the working part, it was enough only to replace the flint plate, and not to manufacture the entire tool.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Web in industry 07.11.2015

The web, which signals to its owner that fresh food has arrived, is a protein rich in glycine, alanine and serine.

Inside the arachnoid gland, it exists in liquid form, but when released from the body, the structure of the protein changes, as a result of which it solidifies into a thin sticky thread. In terms of strength, the web is close to nylon and has a paradoxical hinge: the thread can be freely rotated in one direction and it will never twist.

Scientists from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute (USA) have long been interested in the unusual properties of the web in order to adapt this natural glue for human needs. In the course of numerous observations, it has been established that ultraviolet rays are an important environmental factor for creating a web.

For example, the web of spiders that hunt in sunlight was found to be much more resistant to ultraviolet light than the web of nocturnal inhabitants, suggesting certain adaptive abilities.

Scientists added ultraviolet radiation to the list of factors such as humidity, temperature and strain rate. By carefully studying the properties of the web, the researchers hope to create an environmentally friendly adhesive inspired by the spider's glycoprotein filament.

The ability of the web to resist ultraviolet light will help scientists create a technology to protect polymers from the degradation that plastic undergoes due to exposure to UV radiation.
