Liquid nanotransistors for supercomputers 29.03.2013

The advantage of liquid nanotransistors is that they remain 'on' or 'off' in the absence of drive current. In the future, based on them, it is possible to create powerful and efficient computing devices. Scientists at the IBM Almaden Research Lab in San Jose, Calif., have unveiled a new experimental way to store information in liquid nanotransistors, Technology Review reports.

The researchers demonstrated a material consisting of nanochannels filled with an electrolyte. If an electric current is applied to such a material, a layer of ions is formed in it, which changes the conductivity properties of the materials. This process is reversible. By applying electricity to a given material, it can be switched from a state of conduction to a state of non-conductivity and vice versa, thus writing a one or a zero.

A feature of liquid nanotransistors is that they do not need a constant supply of electricity in order to maintain their current state, explained Stuart Parkin, IBM Research Fellow, one of the project participants, who is involved in another IBM project - development ' memory with a treadmill'.

"Unlike today's transistors, the new material can be switched 'on' or 'off' permanently without the need to maintain the state," he said, adding that over time this property could lead to new, more efficient logic devices and computer memory. The liquid nanotransistors created by scientists make it possible to build electronic circuits that can be reprogrammed. This opens up more opportunities than today's processors, where the configuration of the electrical channels cannot be changed, Parkin said.

The problem is that the transition of liquid nanotransistors from one state to another is slow - one or two orders of magnitude slower compared to the speed of modern microcircuits. Reducing the size of the transistors and placing them closer together could solve the problem, Parkin said. Ultimately, with their help it will be possible to create powerful computing devices with lower energy consumption, the scientist believes. According to Parkin's colleagues, the new technology has yet to be studied well enough to see if it can contribute to the development of the microelectronics industry.
