Hand digger Spider. Tips for the home master

The hand digger "spider" is a good help in the garden when harvesting potatoes, transplanting seedlings and even when digging ditches. It sharply - one and a half to two times - increases labor productivity, since it captures the soil not from one side, like a shovel, but from two, and it easily frees the tubers from the ground and brings them to the surface.

The digger is assembled from two conventional forks, pivotally connected to a horizontal metal bar. Only the handles have been replaced with handles made of thin-walled steel pipes. The handles are welded into the fork holders and bent so that during operation they cross without touching each other.

Under the holders, two lugs are welded to the forks, between which there are crossbar loops. The latter is made of a steel strip with a section of 50x5 mm and is connected to the ears with hinge axes - M10 bolts.

Spider design: 1 - forks, 2 - crossbar, 3 - ears on the forks, 4 - hinge axes, 5 - tubular handles

They use the “spider” like this. Crossing the arms, spread the pitchfork and place it on the potato bush. Stepping on the crossbar and bringing the handles together little by little, they plunge the forks (the tips move in an arc close to the bending radius of the teeth) into the ground. No soil displacement occurs and the tubers are not injured. (Previously, 12-15 days before the start of harvesting, the tops are mowed, the tubers ripen and their skin is formed, the tops dry out and do not interfere with work.)

But now the handles are brought together, the digger is raised. If the earth is loose, it pours through the teeth and the potatoes will be on the surface; if heavy, wet, the teeth pierce, shaking the "spider" from side to side, this makes it easier to capture the bush.

When it is required to transplant any plant, the soil around it is moistened so that the earthen ball inside the pitchfork does not crumble and does not damage the root system of the plant. With the same "spider" the seedling is transferred to a new place prepared for it.

Ditches can be dug in the same way. Their edges are quite smooth, additional processing is often not required.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Robot Vacuum Cleaner BotVac by Neato Robotics 19.03.2014

One of the first, if not the first, profession mastered by domestic robots was the work of a cleaner. The device shown in the illustrations also belongs to the category of robotic vacuum cleaners. It's called BotVac. According to Neato Robotics, which announced the sale of BotVac, this is the smartest, most powerful and stylish home robot.

The Neato BotVac robot is engaged in cleaning completely independently, without the participation of the owner. As stated, it is characterized by high efficiency and spaciousness. According to the manufacturer, the BotVac brush is 50% larger than the brushes of other robotic vacuum cleaners. The robot is able to clean as little as 10 mm from the wall and has an additional side brush. The dust container is also larger than other models and is easy to empty.

Neato uses a laser scanner to map the area, allowing it to work out the best route to take while harvesting. From time to time, the robot leaves for the base for recharging, and then returns and continues to work from the same place where it was interrupted.

Among the advantages of the novelty, Neato notes the possibility of working on a schedule and the great attention paid to the effective cleaning of pet hair when designing the device.

The Neato BotVac series includes four models priced from $479 to $599: BotVac 70e, BotVac 75, BotVac 80 and BotVac 85. They differ in brushes and filters. Sales in the US and Europe will begin in mid-April.
