Powering wearable electronics with radio waves

05.04.2021

Man has learned to use radio waves not only to transmit information, take at least a microwave oven or Wi-Fi. An international team of researchers suggests using them to recharge wireless medical devices that measure a patient's vital signs. At the same time, devices will be able to produce energy continuously, regardless of the time of day and weather.

Modern power supplies for wearable medical electronics are not ideal. Solar cells, for example, need to be kept in direct sunlight. Triboelectric devices require constant movement. Another option was developed by a group of specialists led by Professor Larry Chen from the University of Pennsylvania.

Scientists have made a flexible broadband vibrator antenna capable of wirelessly transmitting data collected by medical sensors. The system consists of two metal antennas integrated on a conductive monatomic material graphene with a metal coating. The wideband design allows the distribution function to be maintained even when the device is pulled, twisted or bent.

Then the system was connected to an elastic rectifier, having received a rectenna capable of converting the energy of electromagnetic waves into electricity. The electricity can then be used to power wireless devices or charge batteries and supercapacitors.

The rectenna can pick up ambient radio waves and turn them into energy for devices that measure body temperature, hydration, or oxygen levels. Compared to other sources, its productivity is less, but the system can produce energy continuously.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Mouse Gigabyte Aire M93 Ice 20.09.2014

Gigabyte has a new mouse M93 Ice, part of the Aire line.

As conceived by the company, the use of a new laser sensor with proprietary Ice technology allows you to work confidently on almost any surface, including glass, glossy and even ice. That is, the owner of the laptop will be able to use the mouse even in the most severe conditions. At the same time, it is stipulated that the recommended thickness of the glass surface is at least 4 mm and the presence of dust particles on it will improve the quality of positioning.

The sensitivity of the sensor is switched between 1200 and 2000 dpi by a dedicated button below the scroll wheel. The wheel is tiltable, on the left side of the mouse there are two programmable buttons.

The mouse is wireless and comes with an AA Ni-MH battery. Its capacity of 2100 mAh should be enough for three months of work, recharging is carried out through the micro-USB port, which has become the standard for modern mobile devices.

With dimensions of 113x71x42 mm, the weight of the Gigabyte Aire M93 Ice is 90 g, the operating range with line of sight is 10 m.
