What explains the cases of killing of rhinos by African elephants?

Male elephants periodically go through a state of so-called "must", when the level of testosterone in the blood is up to 60 times higher than normal. At this time, elephants are extremely aggressive, and this is not uniquely related to the need for mating during the rut. In African reserves, cases have been repeatedly identified when young elephants killed rhinos for no reason. Observations showed that this happened more often when young animals grew up in a herd without adult males, which suggests natural mechanisms for establishing dominance as the cause of must.

What is the largest passenger plane?

The first airship designed to transport people could accommodate only 20 passengers, the Soviet aircraft "ANT-20" (which in 1934 was the largest in the world) - 80 passengers, "Boeing-747" can take on board 525 passengers, but the most large modern "Airbus-380" - 853 passengers, if both cabins are economy class!

This is a double-deck aircraft, its length is more than 70 meters, and its wingspan is almost 80. It can fly at a speed of 1000 kilometers per hour at an altitude of 13 kilometers, while it is economical and not very noisy.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Astronauts will be sent to the captured asteroids 11.04.2013

Asteroids are one of the smallest space objects, but they have long attracted the attention of the scientific community. Amateur astronomers are trying to find them; professionals study the composition, calculate the trajectory, try to understand their "pedigree". Enthusiast billionaires are even planning attempts to generate super-profits by mining asteroids. But first of all, everyone is interested in the threat of asteroid collisions with the Earth and methods of preventing global and local disasters.

Many hypotheses have been put forward, in what way it is better to change the trajectory of a celestial body or even destroy it. But they all have drawbacks and require careful testing. Surprisingly, however, the possibility of capturing asteroids, transporting them to Earth is being considered. Here, astronauts will be sent to them for a full-scale study of these celestial bodies. Sounds fantastic, but this is exactly the kind of strategy being considered by the National Aerospace Agency NASA.

It should be noted that such plans are in perfect agreement with the long-term plans for the development of the space industry, adopted by the administration of President Obama. According to them, by 2025 the first flights of astronauts to asteroids located at a relatively small distance from the Earth should take place. Then the time will come for a manned flight to Mars.

The study of asteroids in the course of manned missions is not limited to studying the possibility of removing space threats from the Earth. As already mentioned, these space objects are rich in minerals, and their extraction and transportation to Earth is another task to be solved.

So, NASA is currently working on planning a mission to capture asteroids with a robot, deliver it to Earth, and then study it by astronauts. To accomplish this ambitious task, no doubt, it will require the cooperation of a number of large companies, the joint work of research and engineering teams from various countries, the development of new technologies and unique devices. It is possible that the colossal efforts will eventually be justified.
