What animal, besides the bear, do cartoonists often associate Russia with?

Although the bear is considered the main animal symbol of Russia, its image is often associated with an octopus. This is most clearly manifested on various hand-drawn maps, where Russia, like an octopus, captures and suffocates the border territories with its numerous tentacles. And modern cartoonists depict the tentacles-pipes of Gazprom with the head of Vladimir Putin in the form of an octopus.

What determines the value of diamonds?

As you know, diamonds are beautiful gems. Thus, it can be said that the beauty of a diamond determines its attractiveness and value in the eyes of people. In addition, diamonds in general and diamonds in particular are the hardest substances known to man, and this hardness is extremely beneficial to people. Therefore, it is also a measure of the value of diamonds. Why is one diamond more valuable than another? Diamonds sold in jewelry stores vary greatly in color and quality (clarity). They come in every color of the rainbow, with some colors being rarer than others. Blue and red diamonds and pure colorless stones are valued more than others.

Another factor that largely determines the value of a diamond is its clarity. Diamonds can be as clean as a drop of water, but they can have imperfections ranging from small dots to large cracks. It is known that some diamonds were so valuable in the eyes of people that they played a certain role in history.

The most famous among them is "Koh-i-nor (mountain of light)" - the oldest diamond known on earth. The rulers and sovereigns of many countries were so eager to take possession of it that, starting from 1400, for five centuries, almost all military incursions into India were determined by this desire! "Hope" - an unusually blue diamond, weighing about 44 carats - also passed through the hands of a large number of owners.

There is a belief that this stone brings misfortune to its owner. Other well-known diamonds include Orlov, which was an adornment of the crown of Russian tsars, Regent, kept in the Louvre in Paris, and Cullinan, sawn into pieces inserted into the crown and scepter of English monarchs. Lower quality diamonds are used in production. Diamond wheels are widely used for sharpening cutting tools and grinding lenses. Industrial diamonds are also used in drills designed for drilling stones.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The main scientific breakthrough of 2018 31.12.2018

Employees of the scientific publication Physics World announced experiments with graphene, conducted at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as the most important scientific breakthrough of the outgoing year.

In 2018, scientists from this institute discovered a new property of graphene. Pablo Jarrio-Herrero was listed as the head of research. It was found that graphene is capable of being both an insulator and a conductor. Moreover, the "role" depends on the angle of inclination of the location of its layers in relation to one another.

PhD student Cao Yuan, a participant in the graphene insulator and conductive graphene experiment, was also named one of the great personalities in science 2018 by Nature magazine.

Graphene is a revolutionary material that opens up huge prospects for the development of technology. It was discovered in 2004 by scientists from the University of Manchester. This material is currently known to be the most electrically conductive, lightest, and strongest carbon compound available.

According to experts, graphene is an excellent substitute for silicon. It is now known that the material melts at temperatures above 3 degrees. It is a hundred times stronger than steel and is also impervious to many gases and liquids.
