Telescope to X-ray the Universe

10.01.2015

Delivery of the flight copy of the eRosita X-ray telescope for the Spektr-RG orbital observatory project is scheduled for June 2015. Mikhail Pavlinskiy, Head of the Department of High Energy Astrophysics at IKI RAS, announced this on December 25 at the final session of the conference "High Energy Astrophysics Today and Tomorrow - 2014".

Spektr-RG is a Russian-German orbital X-ray observatory, a joint project of Roscosmos and the German Aerospace Center. The observatory includes two X-ray mirror telescopes: the German eRosita, operating in the energy range of 0,5-10 keV, and the Russian ART-XC (developed by IKI RAS and RFNC-VNIIEF in collaboration with NASA), operating in the energy range of 5-30 keV.

The eRosita X-ray telescope is currently located in Germany, where the flight sample is being assembled. According to Mikhail Pavlinskiy, Head of the Department of High Energy Astrophysics of the IKI RAS, due to the fact that the telescope uses many US-made components, it was necessary to obtain permission from BAFA (German Agency for Economics and Export Control) to export the telescope to Russia. At the beginning of November, it was confirmed that the delivery of eRosita to Russia is possible. It is scheduled for the end of June 2015.

The technological sample of the Russian telescope ART-XC is located at NPO. S. A. Lavochkin, where it is being tested as part of a spacecraft. The launch of the observatory is scheduled for 2016. It will go into orbit from the Baikonur Cosmodrome using a Zenit launch vehicle. The carrier that will be used to launch the apparatus into space is already at the cosmodrome.

The main goal of the project is to study the Universe in the hard X-ray range, search and catalog all the most massive clusters of galaxies in the observable Universe (about 300) and active galactic nuclei (about 000). The all-sky survey is expected to last four years. It will be followed by studies of selected sources in the mode of point observations, which should take three years.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Silk-based hybrid transistor 19.10.2023

Scientists from Tufts University in the USA have presented an innovative hybrid transistor based on silk, opening up new prospects in the field of neural interfaces and biosensor electronics. This biological material is being integrated into the standard chip manufacturing process, making it possible for mass use. The new transistor has unique properties that allow electronic circuits to respond to electrical and biological signals simultaneously.

Researchers have sought to bridge the boundary between animate and inanimate, creating prospects for the development of neural interfaces that link electronics and living organisms. New transistors could become a key element in the development of neural networks, biosensors and neuroprocessors, promising to change human interaction with technology. While ultimate change may not come tomorrow, these technologies provide an important glimpse into the future.

It remains to be seen whether new hybrid transistors will spearhead these changes or fade into oblivion. However, at this stage, the technology exhibits a number of interesting properties, including integration into modern technological processes for producing microcircuits.

Scientists use fibroin protein, embedded in silk threads and spider webs, as a gate material in a hybrid processor. This protein exhibits high sensitivity to regulation of ionic conductance by electronic pulses and biomarkers. In essence, the operation of the transistor resembles the principle of operation of a ReRAM memory cell, changing resistance under the influence of ions, which goes beyond the scope of resistive memory or memristor.

Scientists have successfully created a breath sensor based on a new solution that is sensitive to humidity. The "silk transistor" could become a key element in the field of health, opening up new prospects for the development of innovative technologies.
