World's most complex insect brain map ever created

12.03.2023

Researchers understand the structure of the brain and map it in sufficient detail, but they still do not know exactly how it processes data - this requires a detailed "diagram" of the brain. Now scientists have created such a map for a fruit fly larva. It is called a connectome and reflects 3016 neurons and 548 synapses of an insect, reports Neuroscience News. The map will help researchers better understand how insect and animal brains control behavior, learning, bodily functions, and more. This work may even inspire improvements in artificial intelligence networks.

"Until now, we haven't seen the structure of any brain other than the C. elegans roundworm, the low chordate tadpole, and the anelid larva, which have several hundred neurons," said Professor Marta Zlatik from the MRC Molecular Biology Laboratory. "worked without circuits. Without knowing the structure of the brain, we can guess how calculations are made. But now we can start to get a mechanistic understanding of how the brain works."

To create the map, the team scanned thousands of sections of the larva's brain using an electron microscope and then integrated them into a detailed map, marking all the neural connections. Next, they used computational tools to determine likely information flow paths and types of "scheme motifs" in the insect's brain. They even noticed that some of the structural features are very reminiscent of modern deep learning architecture.

Scientists have created detailed maps of the brain of a fruit fly, which is much more complex than a fruit fly larva. However, these maps do not include all the detailed connections needed to obtain a true brain diagram.

In the next step, the team will explore the structures used for behavioral functions such as learning and decision making, and will also study the activity of the connectome when insects perform certain actions. And although the fruit fly larva is a simple insect, the researchers expect to see similar patterns in other animals. "Just as genes are conserved throughout the animal kingdom, I think the basic circuit motifs that implement these fundamental behaviors will also be conserved," Zlatik said.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

DC/DC converters NSD-10 and NSD-15 for board mounting 23.07.2007

Mean Well announced the start of production of new modular PCB-mounted DC/DC converters NSD-10 and NSD-15 with 10W and 15W respectively. The new products are a lower power expansion of the popular DC/DC converter line and are designed for the growing market for distributed power applications.

The products of the new series are identical in size and pinout to their predecessors ASD-10H and ASD-15H, but they are characterized by increased performance, economy, and a number of additional functions. The input voltages of the new converters are 12V and 48V, the range of output voltages selectable by the user includes 3,3V; 5 V; 9V (except NSD-15); 12V; 15 V; +5V; +12 V; +15 V. Isolation between input and output is 1500 VDC.

Other features of the new products include remote on/off, short circuit, over voltage and overload protection. The 15W models also have remote output voltage adjustment for added design flexibility.
