Why didn't the President of the United States congratulate the four-time Olympic champion in any way?

The Olympic Games of 1936 in Berlin were supposed, according to Hitler, to prove to the whole world the superiority of German athletes and the Aryan race as a whole. These plans were broken by the American black athlete Jesse Owens, who won four gold medals in running and jumping. Hitler did not shake hands with him, although this did not concern Owens personally - the Fuhrer, in principle, refused to shake hands with winners from other countries, but after the Olympics he sent memorable letters to all of them with his photograph. But US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt did not encourage the champion in any way - neither by an invitation to the White House, nor even by a telegram.

Where does the tribe live, in which all women deliberately lengthen their necks by 25-30 cm?

On the territory of Myanmar and Thailand, the Padaung tribe lives, which has an ancient tradition of lengthening their women's necks with brass rings. The first ring is put on a girl at 5 years old, then they are added throughout her life and can reach a total weight of 9 kg. There is a myth that the neck muscles in these women atrophy and the removal of the rings can cause suffocation. However, they are free to put on and take off the rings. X-rays showed that the neck itself in women does not change, but the shoulder girdle drops.

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Winters will be cold 21.10.2010

Europe will experience a series of very cold winters in the coming decades. Such a prediction is made by meteorologists from the University of Reading (England), who analyzed weather data and the number of sunspots over the past 350 years.

Periods with a small number of sunspots, that is, with low solar activity, have always responded in Europe with very cold winters. There is a possibility that in the next half century the activity of the Sun will be as low as between 1650 and 1700, when Europe was frozen (this half century is even called the Little Ice Age).
