Take the following steps.

1. If you notice a very large swelling, a deep cut, blood under the nail, bleeding, or if the finger seems to be broken, call a doctor immediately or take the child to the emergency room.

2. If the swelling and bleeding is not severe, wash the affected area with soap and water and cover with a soft, sterile dressing. Then apply an ice pack or cold compress to the area to relieve pain and reduce swelling. Apply a bandage of soft sterile cloth.

3. If you notice increasing pain, swelling, redness, pus or fever within 1-3 days after the injury, immediately consult a doctor, as these are signs of infection.
