Why is it colder in the mountains than in the lowlands, although they are closer to the sun?

The sun heats the earth's air indirectly. Its radiation passes through the layers of the atmosphere and is absorbed by land and water on the surface of the planet, and only then the air receives thermal energy from them. Therefore, although the mountains are closer to the sun, they are colder than on the plains, since on average, for each kilometer of elevation, the temperature decreases by 6 ° C due to the adiabatic expansion of air. But even at the highest altitudes, valleys can be found, which, due to the special relief and the reflection of the sun's rays from the snow, can heat up well. For example, in the so-called Western Circus, which is located on one of the routes to the peak of Everest at an altitude of more than 6 meters, on sunny, calm days, the temperature can rise to 000 ° C.

How did penguins help whalers in the Falkland Islands?

Europeans began to actively colonize the Falklands in the 18th and 19th centuries, and many of the settlers were engaged in whaling. Heating whale oil and making blubber requires a large amount of fuel, which in those days was usually wood, but there are very few trees in the Falklands. Whalers solved this problem with the help of penguins living here - it turned out that they burn very well due to the presence of a thick layer of subcutaneous fat, and it was not difficult to catch them.

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Mercedes will make trucks more economical 03.06.2012

Today, there are many technologies that allow saving fuel in passenger cars, and more and more hybrid models and "clean" electric vehicles are entering the market. But with trucks, the situation is much more complicated, although they consume fuel much more actively. The solution to the problem was presented by the German automaker Mercedes, the new trucks of the Actros series will be supplied with a system that predicts the traffic situation along the way and optimizes fuel consumption.

The intelligent system is called Predictive Power Control, it uses data obtained from GPS, as well as information from maps, and analyzes in advance the route that the car will follow, studying the topography of the road. Based on this data, the system creates a motion program, calculates the optimal speed and engine operation mode. Thanks to this, Predictive Power Control "intervenes" in the process of controlling the machine from time to time, adjusting the speed of its movement, the intensity of braking in various areas, and even switching the necessary gears. Of course, it is hard to believe that such an intervention can be absolutely safe, but, according to the developer, all these measures do not affect the behavior of the car on the road at all, the only noticeable effect is fuel economy.
