What body part do chimpanzees recognize each other better than their faces?

To recognize the faces of others, a person has a special part of the brain that helps to identify a face not by a set of individual features, but as a whole picture. This is proved by the inversion effect - if a person is shown the same faces, but upside down, the recognition accuracy decreases, although no features have changed. Chimpanzees also show the ability to recognize the faces of other individuals, but they have a much better ability to identify each other by the rear parts of the body, and it is for this case that the researchers found the effect of inversion in chimpanzees. This is apparently explained by the fact that in the females of most monkeys, during the period of ovulation, the skin around the genitals swells and turns red, and recognition of such a signal has become an important skill for males.

When did the first submarine appear?

The first submarine is considered to be the ship of Cornelius Drebbel, built by him in 1626 for the amusement of the London nobility. In an exciting underwater journey on the first submarine, not a bit like modern submarines, 20 people could simultaneously go. To ensure water resistance, the wooden hull of the ship was covered with oiled leather.

The submarine dived to a depth of 5 meters and was rowed.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

3D printing at home 30.09.2012

Scientist Bedric Bene, in collaboration with Adobe Advanced Labs, has developed an original technology that automatically corrects the strength of parts printed on a 3D printer. This technology is very important for the widespread use of XNUMXD printing, which in the future will become available to a large number of people and open up completely new possibilities.

Already today, anyone can create on a computer with the help of a graphic editor a model of a three-dimensional object of almost any shape and, for an average of $ 300 for a small object, order a print of a part. It can be anything: people print aircraft models, decorative elements and even weapon parts.

However, often the developer does not take into account the strength characteristics of the material and the design of the object, because of which it easily breaks or loses its shape. According to Bedirch Bene, he himself has a whole museum of broken objects printed on a 3D printer. So, as an assistant professor of computer graphics at Purdue University, Bene developed a new tool that automatically calculates the strength of a structure created by an inexperienced user and simply "adds where necessary" or points out an error. A simple software algorithm analyzes an object using a grid and requires less processing power than traditional modeling tools used in high-precision work such as turbine blade modeling.

The new tool uses simple methods to solve the strength problem. By analyzing the strength of a structure and identifying weak points, it automatically strengthens the item, either by increasing the thickness of key structural elements or by adding bracing. A third option can also be used: reducing the load on structural elements by distributing the excess weight of individual elements. Bedrich Bene managed not only to help solve the problem of the strength of 3D printer products, but also to make them cheaper - weight savings in some cases reached 80%.

In the future, when XNUMXD printing will appear in almost every home, such a tool will eliminate many errors and save resources.
