Why is it forbidden in India and China to find out the sex of the baby during pregnancy?

China and India are among the countries with the highest sex ratio, that is, an overabundance of men. For cultural and economic reasons, the birth of boys in these countries is more desirable for parents, which leads to a large number of abortions due to sexual selectivity. For this reason, both China and India have even passed laws prohibiting the determination of the sex of a child before birth using ultrasound or any other method. However, the bans show little effectiveness, since illegally such services are available to any family.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What is dust?

Dust is formed by tiny solid particles suspended in the air. Dust, as a rule, is lifted from the ground by the wind, then is carried in the air under the influence of air currents, until it again settles on the surface under the influence of gravity or along with rain and snow.

Dust sources can be very different. It appears as a result of soil weathering, is ejected from the craters of volcanoes during eruptions, is found in the exhaust gases of cars and other vehicles, and even in ocean spray. Perhaps the last of these sources - the ocean - will seem doubtful to you. Indeed, how can ocean water serve as a source of dust?

However, did you know that every year 2 tons of various salts enter the earth's atmosphere from the ocean? Water, evaporating, turns into water vapor, and the chemical elements contained in ocean salt remain in the air. Surely each of you heard the expression dust storm. It occurs in areas where natural vegetation has died due to drought. During such a storm, thousands of tons of dust rise into the air and are transported to a distance of up to 000 km, or even more!

For example, during a dust storm that raged in the southwestern United States in 1933, about 10 tons of dust fell per square kilometer in New England (the northeastern region of the United States). The dust that rose as a result of a storm in the great African Sahara desert flew to London and other European cities! In general, the atmosphere constantly contains a huge amount of dust. Approximately 43 tons of dust are deposited on the United States every year, and of these, approximately 000 tons are due to human activity.

Air pollution by dust is one of the causes of mud clouds - smog - hanging over major cities. Currently, in all developed countries there are special systems to combat this evil that damages human health and the environment.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Toshiba superconducting electric motor 04.07.2022

Toshiba ESS Corporation has applied all of its expertise in nuclear and thermal technology to develop a prototype of a lightweight and powerful superconducting motor for "mobile applications".

The new electric motor weighs ten times less than fossil fuel engines of comparable power. This combination of characteristics will be appreciated in aviation and in the new field of air taxi with vertical takeoff and landing.

Toshiba's prototype superconducting electric motor measures 50 x 70 cm (excluding the shaft) and has a power of 2 MW. The company intends to start commercial production of such engines at the end of this decade.

The superconducting motor was developed by a team of engineers and experts at Toshiba ESS's Keihin Operations division, which is experienced in designing and manufacturing generators and superconducting products for the nuclear and thermal industries.

An electric propulsion system using the effect of superconductivity (probably, we are talking about high-temperature superconductivity) will save battery power in flight due to higher efficiency and lower current resistance losses.

According to experts, superconducting electric motors in aviation can save up to 30% of fuel compared to traditional technical solutions.
