The nearest "neighbor" of the Earth from the side opposite to the Sun, Mars has a color resembling fire. It is smaller than the Earth by about half in diameter and 9 times in mass. A year on Mars lasts about two Earth years, and the period of its revolution around its own axis is approximately equal to the Earth.

With a telescope on Mars, you can see dark and light areas of the surface, and bright white spots at the poles: these are polar snow caps. Sometimes it is possible to see "blue clouds" on this planet. Smaller details of the surface of Mars were able to be seen from the pictures taken by automatic interplanetary stations. Mars looks like a lifeless desert covered with reddish sand. On Mars, there are numerous meteoric craters, strongly smoothed by winds. There are mountains, some of them are extinct volcanoes. On Mars is the highest mountain in the solar system - this is Mount Olympus with a height of 27 kilometers, three times higher than our terrestrial Everest.

Mars is not as warm as Earth. He gets 2,15 times less solar energy. Even at the equator, in the hottest zone, at noon the temperature rarely rises above 0°, and at night it drops to minus 100°. And it's even colder at the poles. There is no liquid water on Mars. The atmosphere is very thin. Winds and even hurricanes often arise in it. The Martian soil was studied using samples taken by the American stations Viking-1 and Viking-2. Studies have shown that there are not even microorganisms on Mars, that is, there is no life on Mars.
