How high can crocodiles climb trees?

Crocodiles can climb trees and do it willingly. Watching individuals of different species in Australia, Africa and America, zoologists noticed crocodiles climbing trees to a height of up to two meters, although according to some local residents, they can climb even much higher - up to ten meters. If young crocodiles can climb vertically along the trunk, only branches inclined to the ground or water submit to adults. Scientists associate this behavior with the desire of crocodiles to inspect their territory and bask in the sun.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What is mold?

You may have observed the following phenomenon. You left a piece of bread in a wet plastic bag in the kitchen and after a couple of days, you stumble upon it and find it covered in a green, "fluffy" coating. In such cases, the bread is said to be "moldy" or moldy.

Where did this mold come from, and what does it represent? First of all, it should be noted that spores of green and black mold are present in the air almost everywhere. If they manage to get into favorable conditions and gain access to nutrients, then they begin to multiply at a rapid pace.

If we look at the web-like mold under a microscope, we can find that it consists of many long, colorless threads, on which there are branches of two types. Long branches have small black balls containing spores at the end. Other, shorter ones, penetrate deep into the surface (in our case, a piece of bread) on which the mold is located. They serve the mold in the same way that the roots do for other plants, as they not only help it to gain a foothold in one place, but also absorb the nutrients necessary for its growth. They are present in any type of mold.

This means, in other words, that the mold is not able to produce food for itself in the same way that green plants do, and therefore scientists classify it as a simple fungal parasitic plant.

Most people in life have to deal with mainly two types of mold: black and green. As you might guess, these names correspond to the color of these varieties. The ubiquity of mold, as already mentioned, is primarily due to the huge number of its spores in the air around us. Therefore, one has only to forget fresh food, canned food, fruits and even a leather product for one or two days in a warm, damp room, as they are immediately "attacked" by spores, and a colony of mold fungi grows on the object.

The green mold that appears on bread is extremely similar to another mold that lives in the soil and is the raw material for the production of the well-known drug - penicillin.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Concrete will become stronger 12.04.2020

Concrete is called "artificial stone" for its strength. But can it be made even stronger? Australian scientists can say for sure and answer this question in the affirmative. They have developed a technique that makes traditional concrete 17% stronger, which can be extremely important when pouring critical and large structures. At the same time, the technology is relatively low-cost and has a positive effect on the environment.

The researchers drew attention to how the properties of the concrete mix ... slag. We are talking about steel production waste. It turns out that in the process of smelting steel alloys, a lot of slag remains, which is often not used in any way. On a global scale, we are not talking about 130 tons of steel slag that need to be disposed of. The Australians claim that now construction companies will buy it themselves as a valuable additive in concrete.

The fact is that slags are something like a sponge that absorbs metals until completely saturated. They also absorb water, pre-purifying it of impurities. If such slag is added to the prepared concrete, then its strength increases significantly. The best results are achieved if the water driven through the slag masses has been pre-enriched with phosphorus.

This technology has room for development. It has been established that phosphorus in agriculture plays the role of waste that is harmful to the environment. By using such waste to enrich the water used to soak the slag, several complex problems can be solved at once with minimal cost. Scientists are confident that the development and implementation of such techniques will improve the ecology on Earth.
