Circe

Homer
Homer

Phraseologism: Circe.

Meaning: An insidious, dangerous beauty who can subdue her will, "bewitch", etc.

Origin: From the poem "Odyssey" by the legendary poet of Ancient Greece Homer (IX century BC). Circe is an insidious sorceress who, in the Odyssey, turns Odysseus' companions into pigs with the help of a magical drink. And only Odysseus, to whom the patron of all travelers, the god Hermes, gave an antidote in the form of a magical plant, was able to resist this delusion and remained a man. Then Circe offered him her love. After making her first swear that she would restore the human form to his comrades and that she was not plotting anything evil against him, Odysseus agreed to her proposal.

Random phraseology:

Stone guest.

Meaning:

About the one who came unexpectedly and led everyone into confusion (iron.).

Origin:

From the drama "The Stone Guest" (1830) by A. S. Pushkin (1799-1837). At the end of this play, a stone statue of the Commander, Don Alvar de Solva, appears, killed by Don Juan (Don Juan), who seeks the love of the Commander's widow. The revived statue takes Don Juan with him to hell.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

TideGen Helical Subsea Turbine for Tidal Energy 08.08.2012

The original TideGen helical subsea turbine will be installed in the Strait of Fundy in the northeastern Gulf of Maine, which borders Canada and the United States. This bay is known for its record high tides, so the turbine will run at high speeds and be subjected to heavy loads.

The TideGen project is different from most underwater turbines, which have wide "fans" similar to their land-based counterparts. In contrast, TideGen is a tubular cylindrical design with spiral bladed blades. This design is highly efficient, reliable and resistant to storms. The turbine is located horizontally at the bottom. It is easy to install and does not interfere with navigation.

The first turbine will generate 150 kW at a water flow rate of 11 km/h. Later, it is planned to install another 19 turbines, which will bring the capacity of the underwater power plant to 3 MW. That's enough to power 1200 homes and small businesses in Maine.

This project can have a significant impact on tidal energy. If the settlement price for electricity (21,5 cents per kWh) can be achieved, the $21 million project will be profitable and will be a good incentive for the development of this type of generating capacity.

In the US alone, converting the movement of waves and tides into electrical energy can supply thousands of terawatt-hours per year, or about a third of all electricity currently used in the US. At the same time, compared to solar panels and windmills, underwater turbines generate a given power continuously, without large jumps.
