The fastest engine is the steam turbine. It gives up to 30000 rpm. A steam turbine wheel is similar to a mill wheel. The difference is that its blades look like spoons and are placed obliquely, like those of a water turbine. To the wheel, and sometimes to a number of such wheels, planted on a common shaft, steam pipes are connected, beating with a powerful stream of steam on the blades and forcing the turbine to rotate at great speed.

Back in 1629, the Roman mechanic Branca invented the "crowd". The description indicated that it was driven by a jet of steam hitting the blades of the wheel. Such a machine was not implemented, but the idea was embodied in modern steam turbines.

Working model of a steam turbine

A model that vaguely resembles a steam turbine can be built by yourself from a tin can with a narrow steam vent and a wheel with blades mounted on an axle. The axle struts are fixed on the lid of a tin that plays the role of a steam boiler.

Ivan Ivanovich Polzunov, a mechanic at a plant in Barnaul (in Altai), created a project in the second half of the 23th century and built, for the first time in the world, a steam engine. May 1766, XNUMX, a week after the death of a talented inventor, the machine began to work.

This invention was soon abandoned, and the Englishman Watt was erroneously called the first inventor of the steam engine, although he built his engine twenty years later than Polzunov's "fire engine".

Ural craftsmen - Efim Cherepanov and his son Miron - in 1832 built the first Russian steam locomotive, which was called the "land steamer". This undertaking did not find support in tsarist Russia, it was forgotten and abandoned.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Nanotubes will help to collect oil 02.05.2012

Researchers from Rice University and Pennsylvania State University have found that adding boron to carbon during the process of making nanotubes turns them into a resilient sponge that can repeatedly soak up oil.

During the growth of carbon nanotubes, boron creates "knots" that promote the formation of covalent bonds and a new material with unique properties. So, during the experiments, the nanosponge was immersed in a cup of water with a film of used motor oil. The sponge absorbed the oil, after which it was set on fire. As a result, the oil burned out, and the sponge was again used to collect oil products. The sponge can be used repeatedly - it remains elastic after 10000 compressions. At the same time, the sponge can be used not only to purify water from oil products, but also to store various hydrocarbons. To extract oil from such a soft "tank" you just need to squeeze it.

The creation of covalent bonds between carbon nanotubes is an important technology required for the fabrication of three-dimensional structures from this promising material. Until now, the development of such structures remains a complex technological problem, and the study of American scientists in this regard is very important. The unique nanosponge was created using a common chemical vapor deposition process. Due to the addition of boron, atomic-scale "knots" and covalent bonds of carbon nanotubes were formed. A detailed elemental analysis showed that these "nodules" are centers of concentration of excess boron atoms.

The new technology opens up opportunities for the production of a variety of materials with unusual properties. In particular, the oil-absorbing nanosponge has light weight, superhydrophobicity, high porosity, heat resistance, and mechanical flexibility. In addition, it has magnetic properties, which makes it possible, for example, to drop tons of spongy mass onto the surface of an oil-polluted ocean, and then collect a high-tech sorbent using magnets.
