Vegetative propagation is carried out by dividing the bulbs. Harvesting of bulbs for medical use is carried out in May - June.

Chemical composition. Bulbs of the white variety contain bufadienolides, the main one is scillaren A bioside, a scillarenin derivative, saponins and other substances. They also contain a significant amount of tannins, calcium oxalate, mucus - sinistrin (up to 30%) and sugars (up to 20%). Bulbs of the red variety also contain scillirosidine derivatives.

Sea onion (drimiya primorskaya)

Application in medicine. Sea onion preparations are used both in official and in folk medicine, as well as in homeopathy. Infusion, the bulb powder has a laxative and diuretic effect, it has long been used to treat dropsy. =

The pharmaceutical industry produces the drug Scillaren, which can be in the form of a solution, tablets, suppositories. It is used in cardiology.

Other uses. Sea onion is also an effective deratization agent. For this purpose, mainly the red variety is used. Sea onions are almost harmless to humans and pets.

To kill an adult rat, you need only 0,3-0,4 grams of raw sea onions. So one bulb is enough to poison 1500 rats or 4000 mice. Squill has another advantage: the corpses of rodents poisoned by it almost do not decompose, but when dried out, they become mummified.

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Coffee without coffee beans 02.01.2020

An American startup, having studied the chemical composition of coffee beans, created the world's first coffee, for the preparation of which they are not needed.

By studying the chemical composition of various types of coffee, scientists were able to recreate its key elements, namely the smell, color, texture, and left the caffeine.

They decided to just take away the bitterness, since the vast majority of coffee lovers interrupt it with sugar or cream.

Coffee without coffee beans does not harm the environment, as traditional coffee does. The demand for it is increasing from year to year, which means that the crops of grains are expanding and harming the environment.

On sale a new type of coffee will appear in 2020 in Seattle.
