Why do female squirrels collect the feces of their young with their mouths?

Small squirrels up to a certain age do not defecate spontaneously, but only when the mother stimulates them with the tongue. Females collect the waste products of their cubs with their mouths and carry them away from the nest so that predators cannot easily find its location by smell. Female deer resort to the same tactics.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Why was the great Hercules forced to obey the insignificant Eurystheus?

The culprit of this absurdity was Ata - the eldest daughter of Zeus, whose mother was the goddess of discord Eris. Ata was also a goddess - she personified instant madness, clouding the mind and bringing misfortune to a person (or misfortune itself, caused by clouding of the mind).

While waiting for the birth of Hercules at Alcmene, Zeus, whose mind was darkened by Ata, boasted that the born mortal would rule the noble family of Perseus. Hearing these words, Hera demanded a promise from Zeus that the one who was born in the family of Perseus before dark would become the supreme king. When Zeus gave this unbreakable oath, Hera immediately went to Mycenae and hastened the birth of Nikippa, the wife of King Sthenelus. Then she hurried to Thebes and squatted at the door of Alcmene, with her clothes tied in knots, her legs crossed, and her hands tightly clasped. So she delayed the birth of Hercules until the seven-month-old son of Sthenelus lay down in the cradle.

According to another version, Hera entrusted the task of changing the birth date of Nicippa and Alcmene to her daughter Ilithyia, the goddess of childbirth. One way or another, but the great Hercules, who was born an hour later, turned out to be dependent on the insignificant Eurystheus. Upon learning of this, Zeus went into an indescribable rage. Grabbing Ata, because of which he fell for the trick of Hera, he swore that he would never allow her to Olympus, and then threw her to the ground. Since then, Ata has lived among people, bringing them a lot of grief and disaster.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

The roof of the world starts to leak 18.07.2002

Whether human activity is to blame for the fact that global warming is going on is still not exactly clear, but it is clearly coming. Employees of the UN Environment Program report that glaciers have begun to melt in the Himalayas.

Global warming is expressed primarily in the fact that the temperature is rising in cold areas. The Himalayas are now on average one degree warmer than they were 30 years ago.

According to images from space, it was calculated that the glaciers of Bhutan annually retreat by 30-40 meters, Nepalese - by a hundred meters. Therefore, in Nepal and Bhutan, 44 mountain lakes threaten to overflow (the total number of lakes in this region is about four thousand). Then the water with silt will fall into the valleys, sweeping away everything in its path. Tens of thousands of people could die.

UN experts are proposing to gradually release water from the lakes, using it for irrigation or to generate electricity, but such projects will be very expensive.
