When the Germans besieged Paris for five months during the Franco-Prussian War in 1870, food shortages quickly arose in the city. As ordinary foods began to run out, Parisians began to eat horse meat, and then cats, dogs and rats. When this meat also came to an end, chefs began to purchase animals from zoos, offering exotic dishes from them to wealthy customers. After antelopes, camels and zebras, the turn came to two Parisian elephants - Castor and Pollux, whose meat, by all accounts, was tasteless. For comparison, during more than two years of the blockade of Leningrad, its inhabitants did not touch a single animal from the zoo.

Do sea stars have eyes?

The starfish is one of the most curious sea creatures. Among its unusual relatives are spiny sea urchins, sea cucumbers and sea cucumbers. There are about 6000 species of such relatives, which are called "echinoderms".

The starfish and its relatives have well-developed nervous and digestive systems. These systems have the same five-link structure inherent in all echinoderms. Sea stars are sometimes classified into three groups. There are brittle stars that, when caught, shed their long, flexible appendages that can reach a length of 20-25 centimeters.

There are also feather stars, whose wriggling rays look like tufts of feathers. And there are ordinary starfish, the size of which usually does not exceed 13 centimeters. The rough, tough skin of the starfish is covered with short needles. In the center of her body, above and below, are button-shaped discs. Through these disks, the stars draw in or release sea water. The lower discs act as the mouth.

The eyes are at the tips of the rays and are protected by a ring of needles. On the ventral side, grooves with tubular suction legs diverge along the rays. They are used for locomotion and as organs of smell.

The starfish is not able to move very quickly on its small tubular legs, but it is capable of something more remarkable. She can open an oyster! She presses her mouth against the oyster shell and pulls on it until it finally opens. The starfish then turns its stomach inside out, sticks it out of its mouth, and wraps it around the oyster.

The starfish can take food into their mouths in quite the usual way. She is also capable of restoring broken beams. She can even grow a whole new body from a single beam!

Inflatable steel structures 20.06.2021

A design team from Poland and Switzerland has perfected a method for creating inflatable steel furniture that has revolutionized wind energy and construction. Designers - architect Oskar Zieta and materials scientist at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Philippe Domain - created the engineering method as a way to make steel products lighter and less expensive without sacrificing strength.

This technology, called free internal pressure deformation (FiDU), requires laser cutting of steel sheets that are precisely shaped with an accuracy of plus or minus 0,1 mm. These 1mm thick high strength steel sheets are then robot welded for maximum manufacturing precision.

The three-legged Plopp stools designed by Zieta are produced as rolled tubes from a thin sheet of steel. They can then be inflated with a simple valve to create a strong, lightweight and stylish seat. Thanks to the inherent strength of steel and innovative FiDU technology, the award-winning Plopp chair can withstand a load of more than two tons.

Since the compressed air pressure only needs to be 0,1-50 bar, furniture made using this method can even be inflated with a bicycle pump. Unlike existing hydroforming methods used in the automotive sector, FiDU does not rely on a mold to form the steel during inflation, so it can be done even at home.

This means that the metal will deform as it inflates according to its natural characteristics, making the individual contours of each piece unique, even if they are all of the same design.

While the concept of flat furniture has changed the face of interior shopping forever, the FiDU method offers even more convenience with less weight. Transporting even flat packing furniture takes up a lot of space, but uninflated Plopp stools take up almost no space compared to fully formed items. This leads to a significant reduction in transport-related costs and emissions.

Designers see the possibilities of inflatable steel going far beyond furniture. Thanks to the team's experience in architecture, they were successful in building a small bridge using an inflatable steel structure.
