Why were the winners of the 2000 Paralympics basketball tournament stripped of their medals?

In the final of the basketball tournament among athletes with intellectual disabilities at the 2000 Paralympic Games in Sydney, the Spanish team won against the Russians. After some time, one of the owners of gold medals, journalist Carlos Ribagorda, said that only two of the twelve members of that team were really disabled, and the rest, like himself, were just pretending. The IOC deprived the Spaniards of medals and awarded the first place to the Russian team, and then generally banned competitions for people with disabilities with weak intellect. It wasn't until the London 2012 Paralympics that this group was allowed to compete in some sports, and the IOC's control over possible cheating became much tighter.

When were the first fertilizers applied?

Any substance added to the soil to enrich it and speed up plant growth is a fertilizer. Why is fertilizer needed? Essentially, they maintain the fertility of rich soil and compensate for the lack of fertility of poor soil. As plants mature, they absorb nutrients from the soil. Thus, they deplete the supply of soil nutrients in order to replenish it, the farmer uses fertilizers.

There are natural fertilizers that once existed plants and living beings turn into. This is humus, which consists of the remains of rotted plants, flour made from animal bones or seeds, as well as manure. And there are also chemical fertilizers that are taken from different sources. Man has been using fertilizer for a long time. We do not know how long ago, but it is known that the Chinese used animal and plant waste as fertilizer thousands of years ago.

In the XNUMXnd century BC, the Romans rotated crops, added lime to the soil, and fertilized the soil with nitrogen by planting peas and beans. Throughout the XNUMXth century, manure was used as fertilizer in various parts of Europe, urban waste was taken to farms, and clover was sown to fertilize the soil.

In 1748, Benjamin Franklin demonstrated the value of slaked lime in America. He laid a layer of lime in the form of huge letters on a field along a highway near Philadelphia. The letters formed the words: "This field was limed." The white letters soon disappeared, but when shoots appeared, the inscription appeared again, since the fertilized area was much greener than the rest of the field.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Antibacterial web material 11.09.2020

The University of Bayreuth has created a material that can eliminate the risk of infection and facilitate the healing process. This is a nanostructured material based on spider silk proteins. It prevents colonization by bacteria and fungi, but at the same time actively promotes the regeneration of human tissues.

Therefore, such material is ideal for implants, dressings, prostheses, contact lenses. Biotechnologically produced spider silk proteins have made it possible to create a material that prevents the adhesion of pathogenic microbes. Even streptococci, resistant to many antibacterial agents, could not settle on the surface of the material.

Moreover, according to the developers, the material guarantees the active reproduction of human cells, which allows it to be used in wound dressings, in the process of skin grafting and any implantation. Unlike other materials that were previously used for tissue regeneration, the risk of infection is completely eliminated. And the effect is not achieved due to toxic effects on pathogens. The secret lies in the structure itself - it makes it impossible for pathogens to attach to the surface.
