The Whipping Boy

English
English

Phraseologism: Whipping boy.

Meaning: A person who suffers for the faults of others.

Origin: Whipping boys in England and other European countries of the 15th-18th centuries were called boys who were brought up with princes and received corporal punishment for the faults of the prince. Whipping boys, as a rule, were of noble birth, but not always - an orphan or a foundling could become one. For such a punishment to be effective, the prince must have had a strong empathy for the whipping boy. In this regard, the whipping boys were brought up with the prince from birth, were his companions in games and studies.

Random phraseology:

Spend the night under the balloons.

Meaning:

To be arrested, to serve a sentence in a police station (in pre-revolutionary Russia).

Origin:

In St. Petersburg there were police and fire stations according to the number of urban areas. It was easy to recognize each such part by the watchtower, where sentinels walked around, in case of fire they hung black balls on the mast (lanterns at night). The number of balloons indicated the number of the district in which the fire started. At the beginning of the 1912th century (in XNUMX), watch towers were canceled, as new multi-storey buildings interfered with the view, but the expression “spend the night under the balls”, that is, in the police unit, was common among the people for a long time.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

New DACs from TI - high precision and low consumption 28.06.2009

Texas Instruments announced the release of the DAC8568 (16 bit), DAC8168 (14 bit), and DAC7568 (12 bit) DLCs. The new products are designed for data acquisition and industrial process control systems, as well as for portable instrumentation.

The devices are equipped with eight channels of precision DLP, which provides the industry's best combination of high accuracy and low power consumption. Key features. The internal voltage reference provides excellent thermal drift performance from 2 ppm/°C (typical) to 5 ppm/°C over the entire operating range, greatly improving accuracy. Internal voltage reference maintains high initial accuracy of +0,004% (typical); +0,02%, eliminating the need for a full system calibration.

The low energy of input voltage spikes during code changes, only 0,1 nV-s, limits unwanted transients and leads to a decrease in total non-linear distortion during signal generation. The wide temperature range, from -40°C to 125°C, ensures high performance in extreme conditions.

Eight separate DAC channels in a miniature TSSOP-14 or TSSOP-16 package and a low power of 0,56 mW/channel (including internal reference current) save power and reduce board footprint.
