Cyclopean labor

Ancient Greek and Roman mythology
Ancient Greek and Roman mythology

Phraseologism: Cyclopean work.

Meaning: Large-scale, grandiose activity.

Origin: From ancient Greek mythology. Cyclopes are one-eyed giants. The ancient Greek poet Hesiod (VIII-VII centuries BC) in the poem "Theogony" spoke of them as blacksmiths who forged thunder arrows and lightning for Zeus. Homer describes the Cyclopes in his Odyssey as pastoralists who graze cattle, live in caves and do not disdain cannibalism. The ancient Greeks believed that all stone structures, the origin of which was unknown to them, were built by the Cyclopes giants. Accordingly, "cyclopean labor" is the effort required for such a large-scale construction, work that only giants can do. And the large-scale structures that are the result of such labor are "cyclopean structures."

Random phraseology:

The tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

Meaning:

A source of wisdom, knowledge, sometimes dangerous.

Origin:

From the Bible. The Old Testament says that when Adam and Eve were in Paradise, they were forbidden to eat fruit from "the tree of the knowledge of good and evil." In the First Book of Moses (Genesis 2:16-17) it says: “From every tree in the garden you will eat, but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, do not eat from it, for on the day you eat from it you will die a death.” ". Adam and Eve ate the fruit of this tree and were expelled from paradise to live on earth.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

New frost protection technology 01.05.2019

A team of scientists from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) and the University of Zurich have found a new way to prevent water from turning into ice crystals even at very low temperatures. During the experiments conducted by these scientists, the structure of water continued to correspond to the liquid phase even at a temperature of -263 degrees Celsius. And, as happens so often in science, the discovery of "non-freezing water" was a side discovery when scientists were engaged in the synthesis of a new class of lipid substances in order to create a synthetic form of biological matter called the lipid mesophase (lipidic mesophase).

During the synthesis of the new material, lipids, through a self-assembly process, formed membranes that exhibited the properties of large and thick molecules. In these membranes, a whole network of the thinnest channels was formed, less than a nanometer in diameter. The water that filled these channels simply didn't have enough space to form ice crystals as the temperature dropped.

The scientists used liquid helium to cool the lipid mesophase to -263 degrees Celsius, just ten degrees above absolute zero. And even under such conditions, the water that was inside the channels of the lipid membrane did not turn into ice, but remained in a liquid state.

The main interest of scientists in these studies was the ratio of water and lipids in the lipid mesophase material, which determines some of the amazing properties of such material. It was found that if the mixture contains 12 percent water, then the mesophase structure will turn from a cubic form to a scaly one at -15 degrees Celsius.

The lipid membranes that scientists have synthesized are copies of the cell membranes of certain types of bacteria, which, thanks to these membranes, are able to survive in very cold environments. And a new soft synthetic material, which was created by scientists, can be used in cases where it is necessary to prevent the process of freezing water at any low temperatures.
