Human tissues can be printed 01.12.2012

Scientists are one step closer to being able to print human tissue implants or even prosthetic body parts with an inkjet printer, thanks to the development of a special kind of ink.

Researchers have long known about the possibility of using existing inkjet printer heads to print living human cells on XNUMXD forms, the main difficulty was precisely the structure of the ink that could carry the cells through the printer. A research team was set up at the University of Wollongong in Australia to develop new bioinks that would promote cell viability while improving control over their positioning during the printing process.

“To date, none of the existing inks have both of these qualities at the same time,” says one of the researchers Cameron Ferris. “Our new bioinks are both printable and cell-friendly: they prevent cell sedimentation and allow for their controlled placement.”

"Creating a substance that provides a method for delivering living tissues not only brings us closer to the development of actually working medical devices for such purposes, but also provides ways for further experiments that will help to open up until now unknown areas of basic science," said Professor Gordon Wallace, director of the research center.
