Where did the blue and yellow colors of the Ukrainian flag come from?

There are different opinions on this matter. According to one of them, blue is the sky, and yellow is a wheat field. Another opinion says that yellow is the color of the sun, and blue is the color of water. Some believe that such a combination of colors was also characteristic of the banners of the princes of Kievan Rus. Traditionally, yellow and blue have symbolized fire and water since pre-Christian times.

What is temperature inversion?

Generally, the air near the surface of the Earth is warmer than at high altitudes above it. The reverse picture is called temperature inversion. It happens when dust, smoke, soot and combustion products rise into the air, forming smog, which is very harmful to human health.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Women's and men's depression differ in genes 21.03.2018

It is known that clinical depression manifests itself differently in women and men: women suffer from it more often, but in men its symptoms are more varied and stronger. At the same time, when it comes to cellular and molecular changes in the brain during depression, they are usually studied in the male brain - although it is likely that the molecular and cellular features of the disease in women look different than in men.

Scientists from the University of Pittsburgh decided to compare the activity of genes in the male and female brains during depression. They found off-the-shelf studies that measured gene activity in the brains of both sexes and compared the "female" data with the "male" ones. All studies used samples taken postmortem from patients with clinical depression (or, more correctly, with major depressive disorder). In general, the statistics covered 50 people, almost equally men and women; samples of patients were also compared with the same number of samples taken from healthy people.

In depression, many neurons, nerve circuits, and nerve centers work differently than in a healthy brain, and depressive changes in brain function are often due to changes in the functioning of genes in nerve cells. However, many of the genes whose activity changes during depression did not match in men and women. That is, in men during depression, the activity of some genes changed, and in women, others. Moreover, even if we take some gene that starts to work differently in both the male and female brain during depression, we will see that it works differently, but in different ways. In other words, in the female brain, its activity changes in one manner, and in the male it also changes, but in a different manner, and not just in a different manner, but in the exact opposite direction than in a woman.

For example, in women, the genes that affect the activity of interneuronal contacts-synapses worked more actively during depression than usual, while in men, the same genes, on the contrary, fell asleep. On the other hand, in depressed women, the activity of immune genes decreased, while in men, immune genes, on the contrary, were noticeably activated. Moreover, such mutually opposite changes often depended on a specific area of the brain.

The researchers analyzed genetic activity in three zones associated with mood - in the amygdala, in the anterior cingulate cortex and in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex - and if a woman had a gene that worked more actively in one zone, and fell asleep in another, then in men in the same brain regions and with the same gene, the picture was reversed, that is, in the first region it "fell asleep", and in the other it was activated.
