The meaning of life helps to sleep peacefully

Many elderly, and not only elderly people, sometimes have problems with sleep: at night a person often wakes up, sleeps poorly, and in the morning he cannot shake off his drowsiness.

Usually, in such cases, some medications or physiological procedures are prescribed, but the doctors themselves do not hide the fact that it is better, if possible, to manage with purely psychological means. One of the psychological ways to make sure that you sleep well, scientists at Northwestern University found out: for good sleep, our lives must have meaning.

Researchers surveyed more than eight hundred people aged 60 to 100 about how they sleep and whether their lives feel meaningful. The "sleepy" questionnaire included thirty-two questions, the "for life" questionnaire - ten, and among them was, for example, this: a person was asked to rate how much the following statement applies to him - "I like to think about what I did in past and what I'm going to do in the future."

It turned out that those who are satisfied with their own lives, who know why they live, sleep better. They, say, are 63% less likely to suffer from sleep apnea - this is the name for short-term respiratory arrests, due to which sleep is disturbed and, as a result, daytime sleepiness, fatigue appear, memory and intelligence worsen, and working capacity decreases. Also, those who live “with meaning” are 52% less likely to have restless legs syndrome, when, due to discomfort in the legs, a person is forced to constantly move them, which again, like apnea, disrupts sleep - and further down the list.

Only older people took part in the experiment - among them were both women and men, both white and black, while none of them suffered from age-related dementia. But it seems that a similar pattern can be found among younger people - although, of course, young people rarely think about the meaning of their lives.

Texas Instruments to release ULP Bluetooth chips 22.07.2007

Texas Instruments has announced its intention to develop chips for ultra low-voltage (ultra lowpower, ULP) powered miniature devices that comply with the new ULP Bluetooth specification. Nokia initiated the development of this extension of the main standard, and the technology was previously known under the brand name Wibree.

It is assumed that from a very small, "coin" battery, the ULP Bluetooth chip will be able to work for about a year, the range will be 10 meters, and the transmission rate will be up to 1 Mbps. The frequency range is the same - 2,4 GHz.

TI intends to produce both types of possible implementations of ULP Bluetooth - both chips that support only one mode and are able to communicate only with their counterparts, and chips with two modes of communication, allowing you to exchange data not only with "their own kind", but also with devices equipped with a "traditional" Bluetooth interface.
