What is a camera obscura?

In January 1839, the Paris Academy of Sciences heard a report on the discovery by the artist Louis Jacques Mande Daguerre. He proposed a method for developing and fixing an image on a plate coated with silver iodide (daguerreotype). This day can be considered the birthday of photography.

But how did the artist get the image itself? Did the camera already exist by 1839? Imagine there was such a device. It was called "camera obscura" - "dark chamber" in Latin. This invention is very old. In the XNUMXth century BC, a Chinese philosopher talks about him in his work. Aristotle also repeatedly mentions it in his writings.

Here's how it was set up. A small hole was made in one of the walls of the light-tight box. Having set the box with a hole to any object, one could observe its image on the opposite wall. This was due to the light entering through the hole. The image was reduced and inverted, but it could be made larger by changing the distance between the walls of the chamber. If it increased, the image became larger, and vice versa. The picture turned out sharper and brighter if the hole was smaller. As the hole was enlarged, the brightness increased, but the image became blurry.

Which writer died of pseudonym cancer?

In the 1970s, American publishers found it undesirable for authors to publish more than one book a year. Stephen King, who wanted to publish more, began to write some works under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. In 1984, a bookstore clerk suspected a similarity in the authors' literary styles and discovered a record in the Library of Congress that King was the author of one of Bachman's novels, notifying King's publishers of his find. The writer himself called this seller and offered to write a revealing article, agreeing to an interview. It resulted in a press release announcing the death of Richard Bachman from "pseudonym cancer".

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

hairy chips 16.10.2007

Inventor Chi Won-Hwang of the American company Intel proposes to stick carbon nanotubes on computer chips along copper conducting paths.

Firstly, this "bristle" will serve as a heat sink, and secondly, it will become a shock absorber and prevent damage to the microcircuit when it falls or hits.
