What is a dam?

A dam is a barrier that holds back or controls the flow of water. The dam creates reservoirs where water is stored and then used as needed. Dams help people conserve and use water and land resources. A dam built in the right place helps to prevent floods.

The water accumulated behind the dams is a source of water for domestic needs and drinking. Dams supply water to fields for irrigation. Many of them have built power plants, where the force of falling water drives turbines that make generators rotate.

There are several types of modern dams. Strong solid reinforced concrete dams are designed in such a way that reinforced concrete can withstand water pressure. They are called gravitational because they depend on the gravity of the Earth, which holds the reinforced concrete firmly in place.

Hollow reinforced concrete dams reinforced with steel. They use less reinforced concrete than solid dams, so they are cheaper. Earthen dams are created from mounds of earth and stone. There are also dams and embankments that control river banks and prevent flooding.

Weir is very important for almost every dam. This is a tunnel through which water gradually leaves the reservoir. The weir is used to control the level of water in the reservoir, otherwise it will overflow unpredictably and the water will overflow the banks.

Dams have been installed on rivers around the world for thousands of years. The oldest dam is Egyptian. She is about 4500 thousand years old.

What kind of ants grow their homes through agricultural activities?

Many species of ants do not build anthills, but settle in special plant structures - domatia. The Fiji species Philidris nagasau is the only species that has gone further and directly distributes the epiphytic plants of the genus Squamellaria that it needs. Ants collect their seeds and plant them in cracks in the bark of trees, and then fertilize the seedlings with their waste.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Cholesterol Tracking Tool 13.09.2022

There is a growing trend in medtech to make it easier to keep track of all the sticky substances in your body that can show early signs of health problems.

Hello Heart, an Israeli medical technology company, has developed the latest cholesterol tracking tool: the My Cholesterol app, an extension of the company's own app that allows users to easily track and understand their cholesterol levels and provides personalized information based on published, peer-reviewed recommendations.

High cholesterol is very common among older people in the US, often occurring in people over 41 years of age. However, due to the lack of recognizable symptoms, it can be difficult to tell if your cholesterol levels are high. Hello Heart aims to solve this problem by offering fatty food lovers an easier and more convenient way to keep track of their health.

The new product allows users to import their cholesterol levels from a doctor's office, clinic, or otherwise. It also reminds them when to get tested and makes it easy to book appointments at nearby clinics. With a gamified presentation method, users can finally enjoy the process of tracking their cholesterol levels over time, along with personalized explanations of their lipid panels.

"We're thrilled to be launching the first digital cholesterol cure, putting more than 60% of Americans struggling with heart health in better control of themselves with a comprehensive view of their readings and personalized trends and insights," said Maayan Cohen, co-founder and CEO of Hello Heart. .

“Today, patients can get statistics and figures about their health from their provider, but they may not always have the right tools to understand the results or take action. Providing easily accessible data and information through My Cholesterol can help people understand how their behavior affects their heart health, and give them the opportunity to take action to improve," he added.

Experts note the importance of women's awareness of cardiovascular diseases, since heart attacks lead to a higher mortality rate among women. When it comes to cholesterol, women and men have different "normal ranges" for several indications, especially high-density lipoprotein (HDL). Recognizing the importance of recognizing the inherent differences between women and men in cardiovascular disease, the new Hello Heart cholesterol feature provides a personalized view of readings based on birth sex.
