What is ozone?

Ozone is a form of oxygen. Oxygen is a chemical element, one of the most common in nature. Oxygen is all around us. It is 1/5 of air (most of the remaining volume is nitrogen). The molecule of ordinary oxygen consists of its two atoms. But there is another form of oxygen called ozone, which is made up of three atoms. Most of the ozone is formed in the upper atmosphere under the influence of ultraviolet radiation. Radiation breaks the molecules of ordinary oxygen into atoms. Then these free atoms are attached to oxygen molecules, so ozone is formed.

Ozone makes up a layer from 19 to 35 km above the Earth's surface. It is called the ozone layer and protects life on Earth from the penetration of strong solar radiation. Ozone is also formed close to the Earth's surface during thunderstorms, lightning strikes, and in x-ray equipment. You may also notice blue sparks flying when the metal is cut with oxygen. These sparks indicate that ozone is being formed. Ozone combines with other substances much faster than oxygen.

Ozone kills bacteria very quickly, which is why it is used to purify water and clean public places. It is used to bleach many substances, such as flour, wax, fabrics. Ozone has a strong "electric" odor and can damage lung tissue if inhaled deeply.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

How do possums differ from possums?

Possums and opossums are different mammals, although together they belong to the infraclass marsupials. Technically, it is more correct to call all species of the couscous family that live in Australia, New Guinea and a number of islands of Oceania as possums, and all species of the possum family that live in America as possums. Name confusion arose from the expedition of James Cook, whose biologist described the Australian animal he saw as an animal from the tribe of possums, and continues to this day: the English words possum and opossum are applied with equal success to both American and Australian mammals.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The order will be delivered by drone 06.12.2013

Amazon is about to launch a new service - Prime Air. If the buyer chooses this method of delivery of goods from the online store, then within 30 minutes the purchase will be delivered by a drone robot. It is planned to launch this service in American cities in the next 4-5 years.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos told CBS about this. He believes that the new delivery method will be introduced to his company within 4-5 years.

Bezos said that the delivery will be fully automated. Human participation will be required only in the warehouse: the employee will need to take the product from the shelf, place it in a container, and then simply put it on the conveyor belt. The drone will automatically pick up the container at the other end of the belt and deliver it to the right address.

A drone delivery service called Prime Air will be a separate option when ordering the product. The delivery time of the goods when choosing a service is no more than 30 minutes.

Prime Air is being developed by Amazon's research department. In addition, the company is negotiating with the FAA - the US Federal Aviation Administration to obtain permission for the commercial operation of drones. Amazon expects the FAA to formulate all requirements by 2015.

Amazon said in a statement about the new service: "One day, Prime Air drones in the air will be as commonplace as trucks on the road."
