What is concrete?

Concrete is one of the most important and necessary building materials ever created by man. It is strong, durable, rather cheap and easy to manufacture and use material. It does not collapse either from fire, or from water, or from bad weather, or from heavy loads. Huge dams, bridges, skyscrapers, highways, houses, runways for airplanes - all this is made of concrete.

Concrete is made from Portland cement, water, sand, gravel or crushed stone. These materials are mixed in the right proportion - and concrete is obtained. Prepared concrete can be given almost any shape by pouring it into special forms called formwork. When mixed, water and cement form a kind of paste that envelops the sand and gravel. When the paste hardens, it turns into a solid, like a stone, mass.

From time to time, moistening the concrete poured into the mold can make it even harder, because due to the chemical reaction between cement and water, the concrete hardens more and more over time. Concrete is used in different ways, depending on the specific purpose for which it is intended. For example, concrete applied in a thin layer is brittle and breaks quickly. To achieve the strength of concrete structures to loads, concrete is applied to steel bars or mesh. Such concrete is called reinforced concrete.

Another way to strengthen concrete products is that it is poured onto a pre-tensioned springy steel mesh. Such concrete is called stressed.

Now they make concrete, containing billions of small air bubbles in every cubic centimeter. Such concrete is called cellular. Road surfaces are made from it, which are not affected by either frost or thaw.

So, as you can see, there are many ways to improve concrete and make it suitable for special building needs.

Why did Marvel create a new hearing aid-wearing superhero?

Marvel employees have received a letter asking for help from the mother of 4-year-old boy Anthony Smith. The child was almost completely deaf, and he needed to wear a hearing aid, but he refused to do this, since superheroes do not use such devices. Marvel immediately remembered one of the Hawkeye comics when he was forced to wear a hearing aid due to an injury. The artists created the special, pairing Hawkeye with a new The Blue Ear character inspired by Anthony, who said, "With my machine, I can hear calls for help from anyone in need!" Having received these drawings as a gift from Marvel, the boy began to put on the device with pleasure.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Blow up an asteroid 20.03.2019

Japanese astronomers decided on a very bold experiment. To collect underground samples for research from the asteroid, the Japanese spacecraft Hayabusa2 will drop explosives on it.

The Hayabusa2 is operated by Japan's JAXA space agency. The landing on the asteroid occurred in February 2019, and now it is planned to drop explosives on the space body to collect underground samples that can help scientists answer questions about the origin of the solar system.

The explosive device will be the size of a baseball and weigh 2 kilograms. Its delivery to the asteroid is scheduled for April. For the success of the mission, it is necessary that the spacecraft, leaving the explosives, quickly move to the other side of the asteroid so as not to suffer from fragments in the explosion.

Moving away, Hayabusa2 will leave the camera to fix the result. The spacecraft must wait a few weeks before returning to the crater area for observations.
