How old is the game of billiards?

Billiards (or pool) seems to lead a double life. For many years in big cities it was difficult to find a decent person in billiard rooms. Then billiards became the game of the aristocracy all over the world. The most glamorous houses and clubs had billiard tables.

The game is so ancient that no one can tell the year it started. Some authorities claim that it was played in ancient Egypt. In Greece, it was known in 400 BC. e. In the second century of the new era, the king of Ireland, Catkir Mor, left behind 55 billiard balls with a bronze cue. Saint Augustine mentions billiards in his Confessions, written in the XNUMXth century.

For various reasons, this game was mentioned by many famous writers in the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries. For example, in Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra, Cleopatra says, "Let's go to the billiard room." Did you know that when Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned, one of her complaints was that her pool table was taken from her?

The first description of billiards in England is found in a book with a complete description of the games of Charles Cotton, published in 1674. Judging from the pictures of the game played in those days, there were all kinds of obstacles on the table, such as rings, pegs and "knots". The player had to go around or pass through these obstacles without knocking them down.

Around 1800, the game began to resemble today's billiards. In 1807, a book was published in England - the first book written about this game - in which billiards is described very similarly to the modern one.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

GeForce RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Ti Gallardo graphics cards with customized LED Lights 23.05.2019

Manli introduced the new GeForce RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Ti Gallardo with customized LED Lights. New items are distinguished by very large cooling systems with RGB lighting, and can also boast factory overclocking.

A massive cooling system with a height of 2,5 slots with three fans with a diameter of 90 mm is responsible for heat dissipation in the new products. They blow over three aluminum radiators, through which five nickel-plated copper heat pipes pass, assembled in a nickel-plated copper base. On the shroud of the cooling system there are elements with customizable RGB lighting. A reinforcing metal plate is fixed on the back side of the printed circuit board. Due to the large cooling system, the length of the video card is 330 mm.

Graphics accelerators are built on reference printed circuit boards from NVIDIA. This means an 8+2 phase power supply for the GeForce RTX 2080 Gallardo and 10+3 phase for the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Gallardo. For additional power, the younger video card has a bunch of 6- and 8-pin connectors, while the older one has two 8-pin ones. The energy consumption of new products is declared at the level of 225 and 260 W, respectively.

The new Manli graphics cards have received some factory overclocking. The clock speed of the GPU for the GeForce RTX 2080 Gallardo model will be 1350/1635 MHz, that is, 5,8% higher than the reference. In turn, the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Gallardo will offer a frequency of 1515/1800 MHz, which is 5,3% higher than the reference frequency. GDDR6 video memory in both cases will operate at standard 1750 MHz (14 GHz effective).
