What is a clam?

The word "shellfish" sounds like the name of some prehistoric animal, but it's not. Mollusks are a large class of living organisms that lack a skeleton, including snails and veners, oysters and octopuses. They have a variety of sizes: from microorganisms almost invisible to the naked eye to giant cephalopods, reaching 15 meters in length! They can live in the tropics and in the arctic regions, in the depths of the sea and on land!

Although there are more than 60 species of mollusks, they all have common features. All molluscs have a soft, slimy, boneless body covered in large folds of flesh called the "mantle".

In many molluscs this mantle is covered with a hard shell, as in oysters, while in others there is no protective shell. Almost all mollusks have something like a "leg", which is an extension of the mantle, and it helps them move around. With its help, they can swim or walk, burrow into the mud or make moves in the tree, depending on the specific species. There are five groups of mollusks, and representatives of three of them are widely known.

The first of these common groups is called "gastropods". Among the gastropods, one can name snails, slugs, periwinkles, which all have one large "leg" on their stomach. All gastropods have a head with eyes and antennae, and many of them wear a spiral shell on their backs. The second common group of mollusks are the double-branched. Oysters, venerki, mussels, scallops and many others belong to this group. All bibranchs have a shapeless body protected by a double, opening shell. All of them live in water.

The last known group of mollusks is called "cephalopods". Representatives of this group have many arms, or tentacles, located around the mouth. These include octopuses, squids, cuttlefish, nautiluses and others. They are aristocrats among mollusks, as they are distinguished by their nervous system. All molluscs lay eggs, but some only a few and others a lot. For some, the offspring appear as larvae, for others, the young are a miniature copy of their parents.

How is Batman related to the English idiom about stupid people?

In England, there is the village of Gotham, famous for the idiom "Wise Men of Gotham", meaning simple and stupid people. According to legend, the inhabitants of Gotham, having learned about the plans of the king to settle nearby and having estimated their expenses for the maintenance of his court, decided to play fools in front of the royal ambassadors. To do this, the villagers indulged in stupid work, for example, drowning an eel in a pool of water or building a fence around a cuckoo sitting on a bush, and the king eventually chose another place for the house. New York's nickname Gotham came from a comparison in a satirical short story by Washington Irving. It was later chosen to be the name of the city where Batman lives.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Volkswagen cars with information projected onto the road 28.10.2018

Volkswagen Group spoke about "smart" automotive lighting systems that will improve road safety in the future.

It is about using the headlights and taillights to display useful information. For example, cars will be able to project on the asphalt the intention to start moving, indicate the direction of rebuilding, and also communicate this or that information to vehicles moving in the stream from behind. These features will be especially useful in light of the coming era of self-driving vehicles.

The technology, among other things, provides for the use of frontal micropixel HD headlights containing up to 30 light elements. Such modules will be able to project the image directly onto the roadway. In addition, the technology will allow the creation of new driver assistance systems, such as optical lane assistant.

As for the rear lights, it is proposed to use matrix modules in them. They will allow you to display various warnings for drivers driving behind.

New assistance functions, such as the optical park assist using microlenses, will further enhance safety when manoeuvring. This system will be able to project onto the road the trajectory of the car during parking, warning nearby pedestrians of maneuvers.
