Why does the whale have a fountain?

Whales are not fish, but mammals. They are warm-blooded creatures, and their young are born by viviparity rather than hatching from eggs. Baby whales feed on their mother's milk, just like other mammals.

But the ancestors of whales, like all other mammals, lived on earth. Therefore, the whales had to adapt to the conditions of life in the water. This means that over millions of years, changes have taken place in their bodies that have given them the opportunity to live in a different environment.

Since whales do not have gills, they breathe with lungs, and their respiratory system has undergone the most changes in the course of evolution. Previously, their nostrils were on the front of the head, then they gradually moved up. Now they form one or two breathing holes that make it easier to get oxygen on the surface of the water.

Under water, the breathing holes are closed by two small valves, and since the air passage is not connected to the mouth, there is no danger of water entering the lungs.

Whales usually come up to the surface for air every 5-10 minutes, but sometimes they can stay underwater for up to 45 minutes! Having emerged on the surface of the water, the whale immediately releases the used air from the lungs. When he does this, a loud noise is heard, audible at a considerable distance. And what does the whale fountain consist of? This is not water, but simply exhaust air and water vapor.

To completely change the air in the lungs, the whale starts up the fountain several times, after which it plunges deep into the water. Some whales are known for being able to dive to a depth of 600 meters! Sometimes large whales will raise their tails above the water or even jump into the air, leaving the surface of the water completely!

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

How to understand a dog 30.12.2013

The Swedish research company The Nordic Society for Invention and Discovery (NSID) has announced a desire to create a device that will allow the owner of the dog to know what his pet is thinking.

No More Woof consists of an electroencephalograph, a decoder and a speaker. All parts are fixed on a special device that is put on the dog's head. The electroencephalograph reads the electrical signals from the animal's brain and sends them to a decoder, which matches the signal with a set of pre-recorded audio recordings. The appropriate audio recording is then played back on the speaker.

According to NSID representatives, they have learned to recognize the electrical signals responsible for hunger, fatigue and curiosity. When pets feel hungry, the speaker will play "I'm hungry," when tired, "I'm tired," and so on. The company claims to be able to recognize other signals, but did not specify which ones.

"It should be noted that dogs think differently than humans. And if signals appear in the brain of a dog that speak of hunger, this does not mean at all that he "thinks" about it. Rather, this is a mental state than a thought. As for the difference between these concepts, let philosophers think about it," the authors of the project said.

The company assures that not a single dog has been harmed and will not be harmed during the research, and also emphasizes that the project is at a very early stage, so for now there is no need to show any special expectations for it.

The authors of the project posted it on the Indiegogo crowdfunding site, hoping to attract funds from ordinary people to the project. The fundraising campaign started on December 16 and will end on February 14, 2014.
