Focus Description:

An oblong basket about 1,5 m long, 60 cm wide and 60 cm high is brought onto the stage. The basket is placed on a low stand - a platform (Fig. 155). Accompanied by his assistant, an illusionist comes out and informs the audience that with the help of this basket the assistant will travel into outer space.

In order for the audience to be convinced that it is this girl who will make the flight into space, the illusionist asks one of the spectators to write their last name with an ink pencil on the hand of a brave traveler. The girl goes to the auditorium, and one of the spectators writes his last name on her hand. The girl returns to the stage. The illusionist says that during the journey it is possible to meet with small meteorites, etc. The girl is somewhat frightened. The artist notices this and offers the girl to blindfold so that she does not see the moment of the start.

The illusionist blindfolds the girl and passionately continues to talk about the flight. The frightened girl runs backstage. The performer takes it back by the hand and places it in the basket. He closes the basket and locks the lid. Then the artist asks for appropriate lighting, disturbing music sounds. The illusionist says that the girl is already in the stratosphere, she is rising higher and higher. "Don't believe me?" he asks. "Look." The illusionist opens the lid of the basket (Fig. 156) - the basket is empty.

The music subsides. The illusionist closes the lid of the basket and announces: "Now the girl is already on the threshold of space." "It's not true, I'm on the threshold of the auditorium," the girl's voice suddenly sounds. The audience sees a girl who approaches the viewer who has made a mark on her arm. He certifies its authenticity. The assistant rolls the stand with the basket backstage. The girl takes the stage. The illusionist is dissatisfied: "Why didn't you let me dream about the near future and what happened to you? How did you get into the auditorium?" “She came out from behind the scenes and walked through the corridor,” the assistant replies. On fig. 156 shows such a position of the basket, which the audience does not see - the corner of one of the walls is visible.

Focus secret:

To perform this illusion, two women of similar height and build must be occupied in the room. Dresses, shoes, hair color and hairstyles - everything should be the same for them. A small scene before the beginning of the illusion is introduced only so that the audience remembers the woman. After she is blindfolded, she runs backstage for a moment. At this time, the substitution of doubles takes place, on which the focus effect is based. The illusionist leads onto the stage by the hand another woman, who stood ready backstage with the same blindfold. The scarf hides the face well enough that the audience will not notice the substitution. Now a woman with a mark on her hand has enough time to go to the auditorium and appear there at the right time,

The double woman is placed in a basket and, trying to take up as little space as possible, presses against the back wall (away from the audience). She lies at the bottom of the basket (Fig. 157). When the basket is placed on its side, the movement is counterclockwise along the axis at point W, and since the lid of the basket closes at this moment, the viewers do not see the DG wall, which does not follow the rotation, but remains motionless and, when rotated, now forms the bottom of the basket with side of the audience. That's the whole simple mechanics of this illusion.

It is clear that the double woman remains lying in her place until the end of the demonstration and can only leave the basket backstage.

The first woman, who is well remembered by the audience, appears in the auditorium. Illusionists are now trying to find twins for this number, who are very similar to each other. If the twins are participating in this illusion, there is no need to tie the face with a handkerchief.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Sugar changes brain chemistry 17.01.2020

Researchers at Aarhus University in Denmark have studied what happens in the brains of pigs when they drink sugar water. The experiment showed that sugar affects the reward system of the brain in the same way that drug use does.

Danish scientists conducted an experiment on pigs. Every day for 12 days they gave seven animals two liters of sugar water. To determine the effects of sugar consumption, the researchers took images of the pigs' brains at the beginning of the experiment, after the first day, and after the 12th day.

Within almost two weeks, the animals experienced major changes in the dopamine and opioid systems of the brain. The opioid system, which is associated with feelings of well-being and pleasure, was activated after the very first intake of sugar water.

When we experience something meaningful, the brain rewards us with feelings of pleasure, happiness, and well-being. This can happen as a result of natural stimuli - for example, socializing or learning something new. Scientists explain that both "natural" and "artificial" stimuli (including drugs) activate the brain's reward system, where neurotransmitters such as dopamine and opioids are released.

"If sugar can change the brain's reward system in just twelve days, as we've seen in pigs, you can imagine natural stimuli like learning or social interaction taking a back seat and being replaced by sugar and/or other artificial stimuli." - summed up Michael Winterdahl (Michael Winterdahl), one of the authors of the work.

Usually, when scientists want to find out whether a substance like sugar is addictive, they study its effect on the rodent brain. For their study, the Aarhus University team chose other animals and explained why pigs are a good alternative. Pig brains are more complex than rodent brains and larger, making it easier to image deep brain structures with this model. At the same time, such a study cannot be carried out on humans themselves. The level of dopamine and the reason why it changes in the human brain is difficult to trace, since the production of dopamine can be caused by too many factors: from talking to someone to playing on the phone.
