The main component of interstellar ionized gas has been obtained

Triatomic hydrogen (Trihydrogen, H3+) has played and is playing the most important role in astrochemistry, in the processes by which new stars are formed and by which the Universe has acquired the form in which we see it today. Specialized astronomical instruments allow scientists to see traces of triatomic hydrogen everywhere in space, but the processes by which these molecules are produced in large quantities remained a mystery to scientists until very recently.

Using powerful lasers, scientists from the University of Michigan have solved the mystery of the formation of triatomic hydrogen by reproducing in the laboratory the mechanism of the formation of these molecules that fill the space from the center of our galaxy to the Earth's ionosphere.

To reproduce the process of formation of triatomic hydrogen, scientists used a strong field laser (strong-field laser), the light from which served as a kind of catalyst for the transformation reaction. And to track the ongoing processes, femtosecond laser light pulses were used, which made it possible to track the fast processes of the formation of chemical bonds of H3+ molecules.

"We found that the main 'actor' in the transformation reactions is the ordinary hydrogen molecule H2. However, this reaction follows a completely new 'path', about which we knew almost nothing until recently," says Professor Marcos Dantus (Marcos Dantus ), - "Further studies of this issue will allow us to find explanations for the occasionally improbable and inexplicable chemical reactions that we observe."

One of the reasons why ionic transformation reactions are poorly understood is that all processes occur in such short time intervals that it is even difficult to measure. The entire reaction, including the moments of splitting and the formation of three chemical bonds, takes from 100 to 240 femtoseconds. This is less than what is required for a flying bullet to cover a distance equal to the diameter of one atom.

The process by which an H2 molecule gains an extra proton to become the triatomic hydrogen H3+ is strikingly unusual. The neutral hydrogen molecule H2, resulting from the ionization of an organic compound molecule, remains in close proximity to the formed ion until it "meets" one of the protons of the remaining acid base ion. After such a "meeting", the proton is extracted from the ion and the hydrogen molecule H2 itself turns into an H3+ ion.
