Do animals understand each other?

If we mean the ability of animals to communicate with each other, transmitting signals with signs or sounds, then yes. If it means communication like human language, then no.

Even among humans, communication does not always take place through words. We have a peculiar way of expressing anger; shrugging to show indifference; nodding and shaking the head; gestures and more. Most animals, by scent and signs, express the same thing.

When a hen makes low noises or ducks, all her chicks understand that this is a warning of danger. When a horse neighs or beats with its hoof, others perceive it as a certain signal. Some animals can understand subtle signs or sounds. When a bird perches on a branch just to look around, the others do not move. But with her other intentions, they can let her know that she flew away, and most likely the bird will do so.

Dogs communicate in a variety of ways. They not only bark, but also howl, whine, growl, raise their paw or bare their teeth. Moreover, other dogs are well aware of what this means in each case.

Animals communicate with each other not only by sounds and gestures, but also by smells. This, for example, helps herd animals to stick together. And what a huge difference this has for dogs, of course, you know.

Monkeys are considered the most intelligent, but, alas, their language is no better than that of other animals. They use sounds and facial expressions to show feelings of anger, hunger, or pleasure. But they have nothing like the words of human speech.

Unlike humans, who have to learn to talk, monkeys and other animals know their "language" from birth. They will emit signals appropriate for their species, even if they have never seen their own kind before.

Birds, however, learn to sing - at least in part! That is why the sparrow among the canaries tries to sing like them. He's learning a kind of "foreign language"!

How is a diamond processed?

How is diamond processed if it is considered the hardest substance? This becomes possible for two reasons: the first is the structure of the diamond and the second is the way it is processed. Diamond is highly crystallized carbon. The carbon atoms that make up carbon have a geometric organization. This means that it becomes possible to break off pieces of diamond parallel to the plane that the atoms form. Then the surface becomes flat and smooth.

Pieces of the same diamond, chipped off during processing, become a tool for processing a diamond. A small depression is carved on one side of the crystal. Then a thin cutter is inserted into this recess. A precise blow is struck on it, and the diamond crystal is cut off. This is done with large diamonds to remove cracks or to create a shape that makes the diamond more lustrous. They do the same when they want to make the most of the weight of a natural stone.

When cutting a diamond, you only need to go in one direction. Diamonds are sawn with a thin disk of iron coated with a mixture of diamond dust and lubricant. In other words, you need diamonds to process diamonds. The diamond machine is very fast, but it processes the stone very slowly. Diamond cutting is a very delicate skill that takes years to learn.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Why is a teddy bear dangerous? 09.05.2006

Plush toys can accumulate potentially dangerous air pollution.

The stuffing of these toys is almost identical to materials used in chemical laboratories to clean the air of harmful gases and then analyze them, says Caitlin Gorbitt of Chatham College in the UK. She and her colleagues examined the outer fabric and padding of 11 soft toys, testing for 13 pesticides and 7 flame retardants.

Most toys contained a wide range of chemicals with the greatest concentration on the outside rather than in the stuffing. It is possible that the toys were sprayed with fire extinguishers during manufacture, and "during operation" they absorbed other pollutants from the air. The content of toxins in toys made using recycled materials is especially high.

Most toys even contained remnants of the long-banned insecticide DDT. Apparently, soft toys should be washed regularly.
