What is a manatee?

The manatee resembles a small whale and is a mammal, not a fish. The American manatee lives in the rivers of Florida, Mexico, Central America, and the West Indies. In length, it reaches 2,5-4 meters. By the structure of the body, it somewhat resembles a fish, but its tail is completely different from that of fish, but wide, spade-shaped, with rounded edges. He has thick, hairless skin, except for the "whiskers" on his upper lip.

Manatees live in bays, lagoons and large rivers, but not in the open sea. As a rule, they prefer shallow water. When they are not feeding, they lie closer to the bottom. In deeper water, they often swim close to the surface with their rounded back above the water and submerging their head, limbs, and tail into it. Manatees feed on plants they find in shallow water. With the help of fins, they send food to their mouths, and one manatee can eat from 27 to 45 kilograms of food per day. An adult manatee can weigh up to 700 kilograms.

Manatees are often referred to as sea cows because they graze in shallow water like cows and often congregate in small herds. Manatees usually give birth to one cub, but sometimes they have twins. To feed the baby, the mother rises to the surface of the water and, sticking her head and shoulders out of the water, presses the cub with her fins to her chest.

Manatees move very slowly and are completely harmless. But even today, in some places, they are still hunted for their meat, skin and fat.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What is the difference between using & and and in movie credits?

Although the ampersand sign & in English corresponds to the union "and" ("and"), in some texts the sign and union are not interchangeable. For example, if two authors of the script are indicated in the credits of the film, then combining them with an ampersand indicates joint simultaneous work on the text. If the names are connected by the word "and", then the authors wrote the script at different times and, perhaps, did not consult with each other at all.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Super chocolate 15.05.2018

20-30 percent of the cocoa crop is eradicated by disease every year. Scientists at the University of Pennsylvania, using the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing method, tried to create a tree that is resistant to disease and able to continuously supply cocoa beans to the candy factory conveyor.

"Fungal disease outbreaks in West Africa could wipe out a farm's entire cocoa crop," explains geneticist Andrew Fister.

CRISPR-Cas9 - edits the genome without modifying DNA. This method is also called "molecular scissors". It consists in the fact that the Cas9 DNA enzyme is placed in a precisely defined place in the chain. As a result, certain traits can be disabled or enhanced.

The team isolated a cocoa tree gene known as TcNPR3 that suppresses disease resistance. It was he who was tried to be turned off with the help of "molecular scissors". The scientists tested the results of editing in practice. An experiment on growing trees with enhanced immunity gave positive results.
