Now we are going to prepare the flowers of fantastic coloring. We will take advantage of the property of some natural dyes to change their color under the action of the environment - the very property thanks to which we were able to turn plants into homemade indicators.

The English writer Rudyard Kipling has a poem "Blue Roses" - about a girl who rejected a bouquet of red roses, and about a young man who went in search of blue ones, but never found them:

"In vain I traveled the whole world - There are no blue roses under the sun."

Just like there are no green peonies, no yellow lilies of the valley, no raspberry daffodils in the world. And yet you can see them with your own eyes ...

In a flask or glass, mix 50 ml of medical ether with the same amount of concentrated ammonia solution - this is the reagent for making a fantastic bouquet. Please remember that ether vapors are flammable, which means that there should be no fire nearby. In addition, both liquids have a pungent odor, so the experiment should be carried out in a fume hood or, in extreme cases, in the open air.

Place the flower whose color you are going to change over a vessel with a mixture of liquids. Some time later (the exact time will have to be determined in practice for each type of flower), the color will change. Both fluids you use are volatile. Ether vapor extracts flower dyes from plant cells, and ammonia vapor creates an alkaline environment in the petals. From this dyes and change color, like laboratory indicators.

Having processed several different flowers in this way, you will get incredible bouquets. If you are going to surprise your friends with unusual flowers, then keep in mind that the bouquet should be prepared shortly before the demonstration, because the flowers treated with a mixture of ammonia and ether quickly wither.

It would seem that in an acidic environment, under the action of vapors of any acid, the color of the flowers should be restored. Unfortunately, this is not the case: irreversible processes are also taking place in the flowers, so it is far from always possible to restore the previous color.
