Melon Pear (Pepino, Sweet Cucumber), Solanum muricatum Aiton.

Melon pear (pepino, sweet cucumber)

Synonyms: S. scabrum Lam., S. variegatum Ruiz et Pavon, S. melanocarpum Hort., S. Saccianum Hort. S. gualemalense Hort.

Names: fr. melon pearl; Spanish pepino; Ecuadorian guayavos.

A perennial plant, which is a branchy semi-lignified shrub, up to one and a half meters high with tasty and fragrant fruits. The flowers of the new vegetable crop are most similar to potato ones. Stem and leaves like a pepper.

Pepino fruits are very diverse, and differ from each other in size, shape, color and quality. Many of them have an exotic coloration - a bright yellow background with jagged purple strokes. There are instances with yellowish-cream, cream and red-violet fruits (at full ripeness).

The flesh of a ripe fruit is yellow or colorless. It tastes sweet and sour and very juicy, as it is 92% water. The sourness of this fruit is due to the vitamin C it contains. Pepino is rich in carotene, iron and pectin, a large amount of vitamins A, B1, B2 and PP.

Shoots and main leaf veins are covered with anthocyanin.

It is a member of the Solanaceae family and is a relative of the tomato and pepper. Its sprawling bushes, with dense evergreen leaves, reach a height of 1,5 m. The fruits weigh 180-400 g, they look like a melon. The skin is colored in a yellowish-green hue, and lined with purple intermittent stripes. In the central part of the pepino, like a melon, there are seeds.

Melon pear (pepino, sweet cucumber)

It originates and is cultivated in South America.

Pepino is grown in the middle lane in heated greenhouses or as a house plant - on the windowsill, in the winter garden.

Propagated by seeds and cuttings. They are germinated on moistened paper napkins, closed with transparent bags, in the dark at a temperature of 26-28 ° C. Sprouted seeds are transferred to a warm, bright place. When the cotyledons open, the seedlings dive.

The fruits ripen at different times: when they become the size of a goose egg and acquire a cream or pale yellow color, they are removed. An overripe melon pear becomes tasteless. Ripe fruits can be stored for several months at a temperature of 4-5 degrees.

Residents of Japan and South America prepare fruit salads and desserts from pepino. In New Zealand, soups, sauces are prepared from it, served with meat, fish and seafood. In addition, it can be salted, canned, dried, frozen, cooked jams, jams and compotes.

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>
