Common hogweed (European hogweed)

European hogweed is one of our largest herbaceous plants up to 1,5-2,5 m high. It grows in forest clearings, wet meadows, edges of deciduous forests, fields of almost the entire territory of Ukraine. The scientific name of the cow parsnip acquired due to its high growth in honor of the mythical hero of ancient Hellas - Hercules.

Young leaves of hogweed are used to make spicy salads, borscht, soups, and cabbage soup. In the Volga region, soft young juicy shoots with unblown buds are poured with boiling water, cooled, rolled in flour and fried in vegetable or butter.

Leaf stalks are often pickled. Before that, the skin is peeled from freshly picked petioles, cut into pieces 2-2,5 cm long, tightly packed in jars, poured with hot vinegar marinade and tightly corked. The jars are sterilized in boiling water for 20-25 minutes. The resulting product is stored for a long time without losing its food and taste qualities.

In the North Caucasus and Kalmykia, flour obtained from dried and roasted young stems was previously used to make drinks that quench thirst and hunger well. From the roots, which are ground and fermented with water, an alcoholic drink with a high alcohol content is expelled.

  • The plant should be watered regularly, especially during periods of heat and drought.
  • Hog parsnip can be grown from seeds, which are best sown in early spring or fall.
  • To increase yields, you can use top dressing with organic fertilizers, such as compost or humus.

Workpiece:

  • The leaves and stems of hogweed can be used to make soups, dishes, and herbal teas.
  • Leaves and stems are best harvested in early summer when they are still fresh and juicy.
  • To reduce the bitterness in the leaves, they should be boiled for a few minutes in boiling water before use.
  • Plant parts can be air dried until completely dry, then stored in a dry and cool place in a tightly closed container.

Storage:

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Breathing out of control 30.09.2015

Training in the mountains or in a hall with a low oxygen content in the air increases the endurance of athletes. However, amateur athletes, doing amateur activities, can do much harm to themselves with such training.

This follows from the work of Spanish physiologists from the University of Barcelona, headed by Jesús Alvarez-Erms: they found that only a quarter of amateurs practice hypoxia under the supervision of doctors, and among professionals such 98%. The latter are very serious about the choice of food: for example, they consume a lot of iron during hypoxia in order to improve blood counts.

Amateurs come up with their own programs, which can lead to anemia, loss of muscle mass and other troubles. At the same time, amateurs are sure that hypoxia will help them improve their results by almost 40%, while professionals are less optimistic - they hope for 5-9%.

The scale of the problem in Spain is as follows: among professional cyclists surveyed, 89% train in low oxygen, and among amateurs - 19%.
