Why do hot objects cause burns?

We have all experienced that fire and hot objects cause a painful sensation. The child does not know this - and gets burned. We are learning from our own experience.

In a hot iron, the atoms vibrate at a tremendous frequency - perhaps up to a million vibrations per second! If we touch the iron with the tip of our finger, we will feel pain, as the fast moving particles will cause our skin molecules to move sharply and quickly as well. You will feel this rapid movement as pain - that's why hot objects burn.

You can imagine how fast the molecules must move in order for the skin to get this feeling. Let's take this comparison as an example. At the melting temperature of ice, which is not hot at all, hydrogen molecules move at a speed of more than 1700 m/sec!

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

From whom did the Tibetans inherit the genes that make life easier in the highlands?

The Tibetan genome contains an allele of the EPAS1 gene, which increases the presence of hemoglobin in the blood, which explains their adaptability to life in high mountain conditions. No other nation has this adaptation, but exactly the same allele was found in the genome of Denisovans - people who do not belong to either Neanderthals or Homo Sapiens. Of all the hypotheses, the most probable is that many thousands of years ago the Denisovans interbred with the common ancestors of the Chinese and Tibetans. Subsequently, the Chinese living on the plains lost this allele as unnecessary, while the Tibetans retained it.

Latest news of science and technology, new electronics:

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

A new island has appeared 28.06.2012

The island originated on December 23, 2011 in the Az-Zubair archipelago off the western coast of Yemen. Four days before, local fishermen were dumbfounded as lava fountains flew from under the water to a height of up to 30 meters. Finally, at this point, a stone cone of solidified magma, covered with volcanic ash, protruded from the waves. The diameter of the new island is only 500 meters, and whether it will remain or be washed away by the surf, time will tell.

There have been no eruptions in this area for more than a century, and a new event indicates the activation of a rift (split) in the Red Sea between the African continent and the Arabian Peninsula. After millions of years, when they strongly disperse, a new ocean may appear here.
