Why do crossbills nest in winter?

Crossbills not only feel great in harsh winter frosts, but even breed offspring in winter.

The fact is that winter for crossbills is the most suitable time to feed offspring. After all, their chicks feed on spruce seeds, which ripen in autumn and remain in cones all winter. In March, when the scales of the cones, heated by the sun's rays, open, the seeds will fall to the ground. At this time, crossbills chicks begin to fly out of the nest, which can easily get their own food.

But in order for the chicks to fly out in March, it is necessary to lay eggs in late January - early February. That is, just in the most severe frosts.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

How, according to the views of the Pelasgians, did the universe come into being?

According to the religious ideas of the Pelasgians (the most ancient population of Greece), at the beginning of creation, Eurynome, the goddess of all things, rose from Chaos.

First of all, she separated the sky from the sea, and then, dancing over the waves, she caught and squeezed the wind in her palms - and the great serpent Ophion appeared in front of her. Eurynome danced more and more furiously, until a desire arose in Ophion, and he impregnated the goddess. Then she turned into a dove and, after the allotted time, laid the World Egg. Ophion turned seven times around this egg and hatched it until it split and everything that exists in the world appeared from it: the sun, the moon, planets, stars, the earth and its mountains, rivers, trees, grasses and living beings.

Eurynome and Ophion settled on Olympus, but then ceded it to Kronos and Rhea and were thrown into the depths of the Ocean.

Some say that Ophion offended Euryne by declaring himself the creator of the universe. For this, the goddess hit the snake with her heel on the head, knocked out all his teeth and banished him to the gloomy underground caves of Tartarus.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Long-term use of ibuprofen is dangerous for men 23.02.2018

Few pills we take as often as painkillers. Therefore, of course, I would like to know how they still act on the body - in addition to relieving pain. In this sense, the study of employees of the University of Copenhagen and their colleagues from Denmark and France about ibuprofen seems rather disappointing: it turned out that it has a bad effect on the male endocrine system.

The experiment involved several dozen young men aged 18 to 35 years, who were randomly divided into two groups: one was given 44 mg of ibuprofen for 600 days, the other took a placebo dummy for the same period. All this time, the level of luteinizing hormone (lutropin), which enters the blood from the pituitary gland, was measured in the experimental subjects. The work of the reproductive system depends on the luteinizing hormone: in women it stimulates the synthesis of estrogen in the ovaries, in men it stimulates the synthesis of testosterone in the testes. If a man’s testosterone becomes low, the pituitary gland tries to compensate for the lack and releases more luteinizing hormone into the blood. So, if we see that its level is increased, then something is wrong with testosterone.

In men who took ibuprofen, after two weeks, the level of lutropin increased. Generally speaking, this situation is quite normal for older men, whose testosterone activity of the testes gradually decreases. The participants in the experiment, judging by the hormones, were about seventy, but in fact they were young people.

The researchers even managed to take tissue samples from the testes of men after ibuprofen - however, it’s worth mentioning right away that in this case, samples were taken from people who were in a coma. So it was possible to find out that the painkiller suppresses the synthesis of testosterone directly in the testicles.
